NFL Draft 2023 – First-round Selection Order

NFL Draft 2023 – First-round Selection Order

Texans Hold Two #1 Selections in the Top Seven Overall Choices

With the NFL season entering the Thanksgiving weekend and the start of the playoff stretch run, teams will determine weekly whether they are contenders or pretenders. With seven games remaining, NFL divisional races are extremely tight with the NFC East, West and South along with the AFC East, all having multiple clubs within a game of the leadership spot. Last year’s Super Bowl champion, the LA Rams is currently in the NFC West basement and faces a must win situation weekly starting with their challenging trip to Kansas City this weekend. In addition, the Rams do not have their #1 selection, being held by the Lions in the trade for QB Mitchell Stafford. Four other clubs do not have a #1 pick, the Browns, 49ers, Dolphins and Saints. Four clubs have two #1 selections, the Texans, Lions, Seahawks and Eagles.

The final order for picks 19 through 32 will be decided by NFL playoff results. The strength of schedule percentage is for each club’s current season.

#5 – 6-3 Ravens
The Ravens come off their bye week with a three game winning streak. Seven of their final eight games are against clubs with sub .500 records making them the favorite to claim the AFC North.

#6 – 7-3 Dolphins
Dolphins drilled the Browns thoroughly behind a balanced attack. Their defense needs to step up to hold the AFC East leadership and win key late games. They get their bye week here with critical AFC road games on their late schedule.

#7 – 6-3 Titans
The Titans beat the Broncos in tight AFC game. Travel to titletown to face the Packers on Thursday night
who are desperate for a winning stretch after being one of the more disappointing clubs in the
league.

#8 – 5-4 49ers
The 49ers came up big vs the Chargers in crunch time to get above the .500 mark. Their second half schedule is very favorable and they are on the verge of peaking in a weaker NFC West than expected at the start of the season.

#9 – 6-3 – Cowboys
The Cowboys are coming off a tough loss to the Packers in OT. Travel to Minnesota to face the 8-1 Vikings. Vet QB Dak Prescott faces a critical stretch here with this club needing strong leadership through an important series of games.

#10 – 7-2 Giants

GMen face a critical stretch from Thanksgiving thru Christmas which will determine any postseason plans.

#11 – 5-4 Bengals
The Bengals come off their bye week and travel to Pittsburgh with huge AFC North implications. Their big play offense behind Joe Burrow and Joe Mixon needs to set the pace behind a shaky line. Burrow is capable of carrying a club if consistent protection is provided.

#12 – 5-4 Chargers
The inconsistent Chargers fell late to the 49ers. Their offense struggles with injuries along the line and receiving corps limiting QB Justin Herbert. They host the Chiefs Sunday night in a must win situation for Chargers if they expect to challenge for the AFC West title or postseason.

#13 – 6-4 Seahawks
Seahawks lost to the Bucs in Germany in a close game.  They get their bye week now to prep for a favorable final seven games. Vet QB Geno Smith and impressive rookie back Kenneth Walker gives this club a potent offense to matchup well with most teams.

#14 – 5-4 Patriots
The Pats come off their bye week and host the Jets where they have a long winning streak. Though currently in the AFC East basement, they are dangerous in big games and capable to pushing for a playoff spot in a wide open AFC race.

#15 – 6-3 Jets

#16 – 5-5 – Bucs

#26 – 3-7 Bears
The Bears fell in a wild game with the Lions. QB Justin Fields has taken his game to another level especially as a runner. They travel to Atlanta with only slight chances to get into the playoff picture.

#27 – 3-7 Jaguars
Jaguars were outclassed by the Chiefs last week. They get their bye this week to prep for a late run in the weak AFC South where 2nd place is possible.

#28 – 3-6 – Broncos

NFL Trade Deadline Winners

NFL Trade Deadline Winners

Dolphins Land LB Bradley Chubb
Vikings Deal for TE TJ Hockenson
Ravens Trade for Bears LB Roquan Smith for Picks
49ers Deal High Picks for RB Christian McCaffrey

NFL Trading Deadline closed – Nov. 1, 2022
NFL Trading Period – Opens March 15, 2023
Frank Coyle

The NFL trading deadline this year became a very active player market with clubs trying to land selected players to help for the playoff stretch run. Each clubs’ salary cap is a huge determining factor on which teams were able to be active, in addition to what players were pursued due to their high salary cap costs.

Defensive players commanded high picks with LB Bradley Chubb moving to Miami for a #1 pick plus later draft picks exchanged. Chubb is having another Pro bowl season and the type who can provide immediate impact for their solid defense. The Ravens dealt for LB Roquan Smith for a #2 and #5 picks. Both defenders are difference makers for a front seven and cornerstone playmakers who take a unit up a level.

Offensive players were the most additions with wide receiver and running back the majority of players who exchanged teams. The 49ers initiated the final week of movement with a blockbuster deal for runner Christian McCaffrey for #2, #3 and #4 picks plus a #5 selection in the NFL Draft 2024.  McCaffrey has already paid dividends for the 49ers, scoring a running and receiving TD plus throwing a TD pass.

Wideout Brandin Cooks stayed in Houston due to his high$18 million salary cap cost. The receiving position commanded the most interest with Chase Claypool, Kadarius Toney, Robbie Anderson and Calvin Ridley all changing uniforms. Claypool brought a #2 pick that set the standard to young starters like Jerry Jeudy, DJ Moore and Elijah Moore. They all stayed with their current clubs with too high of demands in the trade market and no bidders.

Claypool gives the Bears’ QB Justin Fields a high quality starter with big play ability for their  vanilla offense. Coupled with young vets, WR Darnell Moody and TE Cole Kmet gives Fields a high-quality trio. The Chiefs traded for Kadarius Toney for a #3 compensatory selection plus a #6 pick. He has big play ability and a good fit here for QB Patrick Mahomes to get impact from in this passing game. Reportedly, he is over his mysterious hamstring injury. The Falcons traded big play receiver Calvin Ridley who is currently suspended for the season. The deal was for a few conditional future picks based on meeting conditions including a #2 selection. Ridley was a top 5-8 receiver prior to his problems.

Maybe the most surprising trade was when the Lions sent TE K.J. Hockenson to in division rival the Vikings for a #2 and #3, in additional later swapped selections. Hockenson is playing at a Pro Bowl level and in only his third season and on his rookie contract. His presence in the Vikings passing game that features wideout Justin Jefferson and back Dalvin Cook gives QB Kurt Cousins a potent trio to keep this high scoring attack among the elite in the game.

Ravens pulled off a blockbuster deal with the Bears to acquire young backer Roquan Smith. He gives them an impact defender with big play ability to blitz, in addition to going sideline to sideline. They surrendered a #2 and #5 picks in the NFL Draft 2023 plus LB AJ Klein.

A final last-minute deal between the Bills and Colts has interesting potential through the 2nd half of the season. The Bills acquired RB Nyheim Hines from the Colts for backup RB Zack Moss and a conditional #5 pick. This could be a major coup for the Bills and prove to be an addition the Bills can ride further toward an elusive Super Bowl title. Hines is a proven playmaker with excellent hands and highly developed receiving skills. He gives the Bills a threat out of the backfield and very elusive as a runner capable of breaking big plays. He can provide impact here and a piece to this explosive offense who wins in space often and very difficult in single coverage. QB Josh Allen should fully utilize him out of the backfield. Veteran wideout Stefon Diggs commands double coverage often while wideout Gabriel Davis and TE Dawson Knox are proven playmakers. Hines gives them an elusive fast dual threat who gives this offense another dangerous playmaker to change games.  He was the most underrated addition in the trade period and one who can be the catalyst in critical big postseason games.
