Cardinals Hold 1^st Overall Pick Selection Entering Final NFL Weekend

With just one game remaining in the 2018 season, the first round order for the NFL Draft 2019 is shaping the selection process. Currently, 16 clubs still have mathematical chances to earn playoff spots. All NFC division winners have been decided, though one wild card playoff club remains to join Seattle. The AFC playoff picture is more complicated with only the Patriots claiming a division title. The three other AFC divisions are still open with eight teams vying for the five remaining playoff positions.

Arizona has the #1 off their 3-12 record. The 49ers remain at the 2^nd overall selection off opponent’s won/loss records, though tied with the Jets and Oakland at 4-11. The Lions, Bucs, Bills, Giants and Jaguars hold the #5 thru #9 overall choices on the merit of their poor 5-10 records. There is a logjam with four clubs at 6-9 that will impact the top half of the first round over the final Sunday of the 2018 season.

This weekend features a few key matchups, Atlanta at Tampa and Detroit at Green Bay that can shuffle the top 10 selections for all of those clubs. Arizona, San Fran, Jets and Raiders all have road divisional games that will determine the final draft order at the very top of the selection process.

Opponents’ W-L record will be posted next week after all 16 opponents for each team and the final draft order. Teams that are tied are currently ranked in the order of their opponents won/loss record.

With one of their two 5th round picks, they selected FB Jaylen Samuels. Samuels is one of the more versatile players in this class. He plays a few positions at a high level – fullback, running back, H-back and receiver. He gives them a unique weapon on the play clock to shift into a multiple of alignments. He has excellent hands and can play the 3rd down back role where he is also a factor as a runner in a single backfield. Excellent pick to give this offense many options. He was a steal at the 165th overall selection.

Athletic versatile senior was a valuable cog in the NC St. resurgence over the past few seasons, earning ACC honors his final two years. Big back with powerful frame which has allowed him to line up at several positions and perform at a high level. Deluxe ‘Swiss Army’ knife with natural skills and good overall athleticism. Fairly tall as runners go with good well-proportioned weight. All around performer who, during his NC State career, lined up one time or another at every offensive position other than the line. One of the most versatile and talented performers to come along in many years. He was used as a runner near the goal line. Very effective as a zone scheme runner from anywhere on the field. Showed the ability to be an effective lead blocker. Lined up wide as a receiver, or in the slot. Sometimes used as an inline Y tight end. Displayed fine power as a runner, to break tackles, whether taking handoffs or after the catch. At times, he can run too straight up which negates his power to make maximum yardage after contact. Reliable power runner when he keeps his pads down and a good short yardage and goal line back. Fine initial quickness with very good vision and also a fine stiff arm he uses effectively at times. On bubble screens, showed the juke ability to make the first man miss often with fine acceleration to take the ball and head upfield. As a receiver, he displays good hand-eye coordination and the body control to adjust and snare off line passes. Turns upfield after the catch to get nice yardage Field speed is better than track speed and he was able to make many big chunk yardage plays as a receiver or runner for the Wolfpack. Very effective on shovel passes when coming back inside from a TE position. Outstanding hands as a receiver, no matter where in the formation he lines up from. Goes up and plucks high throws or takes them off his shoe tops and secures them. Dynamic weapon on the jet sweep in the Wildcat, or at times taking a direct snap. The ACC even created an “all-purpose” category on their postseason all-conference team to fit a player with Samuels’ skill-set. Reads and follows his blocks well and displays enough lateral quickness to bounce runs outside and gain the edge.

The Numbers: For his career, he gained 1107 yards on 182 carries, 6.1 average and 28 TDs. Caught 201 passes for 1738 and 19 TDs. As a senior, he rushed for 407 yards on 78 attempts with 12 TDs and caught 59 passes for 480 yards and 4 TDs. In 2016, he rushed for 189 yards on just 33 attempts for a 5.7 yard average and 5 TDs with 55 catches for 565 yards and 7 TDs. At the NFL Combine, he came in at over 5’11” and 225 lbs. He ran a 4.54 time and did 18 reps, a 34.5” VL and a 10’1” BJ. Added a 4.28 shuttle and 6.93 three cone. Did well in the positional drills showing reliable hands.

The Skinny: Hard-nosed unique versatile performer with high grades as fullback/running back, tight end, H-back and slot receiver. Highly productive in those roles vs quality D1 competition. Short yardage back with strong leg drive between the tackles. Shows the ability to get the tough yardage and is a good goal line runner who seldom goes down on initial contact. As a blocker, he gained valuable experience in a pro set and showed the toughness to contain backers. Marginal top 100 prospect and one of the more underrated backs in this class. Good production with skills to be a fine change of pace runner and deluxe utility performer. Must be used properly by coach in an offense that features his versatile skill set. Fine short zone receiver.

The College Bowl games this season kick off on Saturday, Dec. 15 with six contests on the schedule — Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl, AutoNation Cure Bowl, New Mexico Bowl, Mitsubishi Motors Las Vegas Bowl, Raycom Media Camellia Bowl, and R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

The College Football Playoff Semifinals will feature No. 2 Clemson hosting No. 3 Notre Dame in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl and No. 1 Alabama hosting No. 4 Oklahoma in the Capital One Orange Bowl. Those games will be played on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm ET, respectively.

Kentucky’s Josh Allen Wins 2018 Bronko Nagurski Trophy

Linebacker is Wildcat’s first major award winner since 1950

FWAA – Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen was named the recipient of the 2018 Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Monday night before a sold-out banquet crowd of 1,200 at the Charlotte Convention Center. Allen, a 6-foot-5, 260-pound linebacker from Montclair, N.J., accepted the award given to the best defensive player in college football and becomes Kentucky’s first major award winner since Bob Gain won the Outland Trophy in 1950.

The FWAA All-America Committee made Allen the selection as this year’s Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner. Allen was selected from a list of finalists that included Michigan linebacker Devin Bush, LSU safety Grant Delpit, Clemson defensive tackle Christian Wilkins and Alabama nose guard Quinnen Williams.

The senior has been one of the nation’s top pass rushers all season with 14 sacks in the 2018 season that led the Southeastern Conference and are third in the nation, to go with SEC-best marks of 18.5 tackles for loss and five forced fumbles. His 14 sacks are the single-season record at Kentucky, as are his 28.5 career sacks heading into the Wildcats’ VRBO Citrus Bowl appearance on Jan. 1.

Allen has 11 career forced fumbles, which ties former Wildcat and current Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan for the Wildcats’ career mark. His defensive numbers improved as the games wore on – 12 of his 14 sacks have come in the second half, with eight of those 12 in the fourth quarter. He clinched two of Kentucky’s nine wins this season with a sack that caused a fumble that the Wildcats recovered on their opponents’ final possession. In addition, those 14 sacks have been drive-breakers for opponents. Of the 14 drives in which Allen registered a sack, opponents ran 81 plays for just 211 yards of total offense, or 2.6 yards per play. The 14 drives combined resulted in no points, eight punts and four turnovers.

Allen was the SEC Defensive Player of the Week four times this season and posted double-figure tackles in three games. On the season, Allen has 84 total tackles, six quarterback hurries, four pass breakups and two fumble recoveries.

“Just the way he impacts the game being a big guy, he’s really remarkable,” Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops said following a Nov. 17 win over Middle Tennessee. “He’s so unselfish. You see players so often in situations like that (trying to make a play), and he won’t blink an eye if we’re not rushing him. He doesn’t even think about it. When he gets his opportunities, he’s going to go. He wanted the (school sack) record, but not at the expense of our defense and what we’re doing and game planning.”

Allen was an all-state wide receiver for Abbeville (Ala.) High School as a junior before moving back to his hometown of Montclair, N.J., and switching to linebacker for his senior season. He bulked up by 40 pounds upon arriving at Kentucky. He has a fraternal twin brother Isaiah, and a sister, Myisha Hines-Allen, who played college basketball at Louisville and is currently a forward for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics.

The FWAA has chosen a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. In 1995, the FWAA joined with the Charlotte Touchdown Club and named the award in honor of the legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota. Nagurski dominated college football then became a star for professional football’s Chicago Bears in the 1930s. Bronislaw “Bronko” Nagurski is a charter member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses college football’s most prestigious awards.
