Long athletic physical specimen was a vital part of the SD St offense while starting during his final three seasons. Earned FCS All-American honors his last two campaigns. Big angular athlete with natural soft hands and fine agility to be a big factor in the passing game. Incredible production at the FCS level and defied double coverage in many key situations. The best average yards per reception for any tight end in the draft and indicative of his ability to stretch the middle of the field and make plays after the reception. Huge frame and long arms (34”) with natural hands and deceptive speed due to his long smooth strides. His height and long length plus his leaping ability allow him to extend for high passes and make him a tough physical mismatch for any defender. Played a variety of ways including inline, split wide or flexed out and H-back. Most diverse TE prospect in this talented group. Knows how to use his size well, whether it is blocking for the running game or using his wide wingspan as a receiver. Attacks the defender with his long strides, can explode out of his breaks and create separation and runs precise routes. Uses his big frame to shield defenders and snatch the ball in the air, relying on his large naturally soft hands. Lacks power as a drive blocker, but shows above average technique to effectively wall off a defender, sustain, and keep him out of the play. Slender athlete and would benefit from strength work and additional muscle to compete in the physical NFL game.
The Numbers:  As a senior, he started all 14 games and caught 72 passes for 1111 yards, 15.4 yard average and 7 TDs while earning 1st team All-American honors. As a junior, he started all 13 games and made 92 catches for 1293 yards for a 14.1 average and 11 TDs. Over his career, he totaled 198 catches for 2988 yards for an impressive 15.1 yard average and 21 TDs. He has the potential to be a nice NFL playmaker. At the NFL Combine, he checked in at 256 lbs. and 6’5” with 34” arms and 10” hands. He did 23 reps, but did not workout due to a hamstring pull. Similar to Jason Witten in size, mobility and overall skill set.
The Skinny: Talented fluid well-rounded prospect with huge upside as a pro. Long receiver with the speed to stretch the seam in the vertical game and capable of surprising and becoming an early starter. Dangerous red zone receiver with impact ability. Developed prospect with the talent to become a major weapon. Rising top 60-75 prospect with developed receiving skills to give a team a different dimension. Nice upside as a blocker. Probable 2nd round pick with a high ceiling for today’s game.

The Defensive Tackle class is one of the premier groups in recent years and one of the strongest positions this year and probably the best along with the cornerback from the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive tackle class has 25 in depth scouting reports at a position which will dominate the first two days of the NFL Draft 2018

 Positional Overview:
This year’s tackle class is a very strong group after an average draft class last spring. It is especially deep overall through the top 100-125 prospects, though not an especially top-heavy position. Vita Vea and Da’Ron Payne are two highly rated prospects who figure to go in the top 15 selections. Both are NFL ready and should press for rookie starting roles. Taven Bryan, Maurice Hurst, Harrison Phillips and Tim Settle are first round bubble prospects. Phillips and Bryan are tweener linemen and scheme diverse to play inside and outside. Hurst worked out well on his pro day after some medical heart issues arose at the NFL Combine. He is a high level three technique tackle with an early starting grade. Settle is a huge lineman who fits the zero and one technique to become an anchor in the middle. He is expected to be selected in the top 40 overall choices. They could see 8 to 10 chosen from the middle of the first round through the top 100 picks. The highest rated prospects are all graded from the mid-1st through the 3rd round area. Juniors head this class with seven of the top ten prospects underclassmen. B.J. Hill and Nathan Shepherd are fast rising defenders with some scheme flexibility and well-rounded talent who figure in the 2nd day. Shepherd is an impressive small college prospect with an excellent skill set to play inside and outside. He is the highest rated small college defender in this class and ranks in the top 100 prospects. Hill is a fast rising prospect who had an impressive final performance which has him rising in the early rounds. Juniors R.J. McIntosh, Trenton Thompson and Kendrick Norton have NFL starting talent and are fine middle round additions. Small college prospects, Bilal Nichols and P.J. Hall were impressive vs top competition and performed well in workouts. They have moved into the middle rounds in this deep class. This tackle group should provide many 3rd day selections who can become good value choices – like Justin Jones and Greg Gilmore. All carry starting grades and expected to be available in the 3rd day. As many as 15 prospects chosen in the top 150 overall picks. Expect as many as 25 DTs chosen over the 7 rounds.

Outside Linebackers – Grade B

Positional Overview: This year’s class of outside linebackers is a very good group that should provide many starters for both pro schemes. With half the clubs playing the 3-4 scheme, this position may supply as many as 20+ defenders for that set. The top two, Tremaine Edmunds and Lorenzo Carter are late developing prospects who had outstanding final performances that continued through the postseason. Both checked off all the boxes which probably earns them mid to late 1st round selections. Edmunds impressed at every event and fits both pro schemes. Carter had an equally impressive final season that elevated him to the top of the class. He could also hear his name at the end of the first round. Seniors, Harold Landry and Uchenna Nwosu are highly regarded defenders coming strong final performances. Both carry solid late first early/second day consideration. Malik Jefferson and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo were playmakers and look to be selected on the 2nd day of the NFL Draft process. Rising prospects Shaquem Griffin, Jerome Baker and Fred Warner have drawn strong attention from pro scouts off strong finishes to their careers. They figure as top 100 bubble prospects. Griffin is the best story of any draft class, overcoming a hand deformity and subsequent amputation to excel as D1 defender who earned Conference Player of the Year honors. His NFL Combine performance will be the standard for outside linebackers for years to come. Hercules Mata’afa and Marquis Haynes fit the 3-4 clubs well. They are slipping through the cracks and have starting ability as 3-4 backers. Darius Leonard and Andrew Ankrah are small college defenders who completed excellent careers. Leonard finished with an excellent Senior Bowl. Ankrah has fallen through the cracks, but carries a starting grade for the outside in a 3-4 set. They have the makeup of premier special teams’ performers and figure in the 3rd day. This position will probably provide 8-10 prospects in the top 100 selections. Expect approximately 15 chosen in the top 150 picks with this group providing many defenders rated with starting grades. There should be as many as 20+ players chosen over the 7 rounds. This class also includes many ‘tweener types who specialize in rushing the QB and good fits for the 3-4 set, though a highly risky position. Oren Burks and Leon Jacobs are two fast underrated gems and projects to the pro 4-3 scheme and early special teams’ demons.

Early Trades Will Impact Upcoming Free Agent Market and NFL Draft

The Kansas City Chiefs made their second major trade since the close of the 2017 season last week, dealing Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Peters to the Los Angeles Rams. The deal will become official on March 14th when the new NFL year starts for Free agency and trading period starts. The Rams have agreed to a deal where the Chiefs will receive two undisclosed draft choices, one of which may be a conditional pick in the NFL Draft 2019. Landing a player of Peters’ talent with potentially two more years under contract at $1.8 million for 2018 and a possibly fifth year option at a reasonable increase is a rare opportunity. It was reported by NFL.com that Peters and a 6th round pick this year goes to the Rams for a 4th round selection this year and a 2nd round pick in the NFL Draft 2019. The Rams can exercise the 5th year option in Peters’ contract for another season (2019). The Rams do not own a 2018 2nd round pick, traded earlier to Buffalo in the Sammy Watkins deal.

The Rams acquired the Pro Bowl CB Marcus Peters to replace young Pro Bowl corner Trumaine Johnson who is expected to explore free agency in mid-March and sign with the highest bidder. Peters is a two-time Pro Bowl performer who is only in his 3rd year as a pro and has become a major playmaker for the Chiefs and ranked as a rising NFL shut down cover man. He already has 19 career interceptions which is the most in the league since 2015, his rookie season. The only defender in NFL history with more in their first three year career is former Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed. Peters earned Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2015, giving the Chiefs a true #1 cover man. The talented Peters though has a long history of off-field character issues, dating to his college days at Washington. The final compensation for the deal will be announced on March 14th. Peters was a former #1 pick by the Chiefs. Trades cannot become official until new league year beings on March 14.

Peters is one of the best corners in the league, showing ball-hawking skills from day one as a pro. In addition to his 19 career interceptions, he has totaled 55 passes defended. Despite his talent on the football field, the Chiefs became discussed by his continuous bad behavior both on and off the field. The team suspended him for one game last season for his actions during and after a loss to the Jets. He tossed a referee’s flag after a play, then left the field without being ejected. As a former #1 pick, he has a four-year deal which his club can exercise a 5th year extending the original contract. With only three years into this deal, the Rams can retain Peters by exercising their option next March and retain him for a 2nd season. In addition to probably losing CB Johnson next month, the Rams lost Pro Bowl corner Javoris Jenkins two years ago to the Giants while earning Pro Bowl honors his first season in 2016.

Earlier this offseason, the Chiefs agreed to ship QB Alex Smith to Washington for a #3 pick and rising corner Kendall Fuller. The two year corner was essential in the deal for Smith. The Chiefs also recently signed young veteran corner David Amerson from the Raiders. Those moves gave the Chiefs the talent and depth to listen to offers for Peters. The Rams moved quickly to replace their expected loss of young corner Trumaine Johnson in free agency. Johnson should be one of the highest paid free agents this offseason. The Rams may use their franchise tag on safety Lamarcus Joyner who is also up for free agency, though not the cost of the coveted Johnson.

The two trades change both the Free Agency and NFL Draft plans of a few clubs especially the Chiefs, Rams, Redskins and Raiders. With both the Browns and 49ers losing out on the bidding for Peters, those clubs have a huge salary cap cushion that puts them at the forefront in the bidding for Trumaine Johnson.

The start of the new NFL year March 14th should be exciting time with the trade market most likely active, in addition to the usual headlines provided by the Free Agency period. The NFL office will announce the new salary cap limit for clubs within two weeks. As usual, expect a number of veteran players released and placed on the market as ‘Street’ free agents.

Washington Trades for Chiefs’ QB Alex Smith – Kirk Cousins to Test Free Agent Market

In an unofficial trade due to the trading deadline starting March 14th, the Washington Redskins acquired veteran QB Alex Smith from Kansas City for their 3rd round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft (78th pick overall) and young corner Kendall Fuller.
The veteran Smith had one year left on his contract and will sign a four-year extension for $91 million with $71 million guaranteed with the Redskins on the opening of the NFL year and trading period.

Smith will now be under contract for five years at $111 million. He led the NFL in passing efficiency this past season, but became expendable with the Chiefs after they moved up in the first round last April to select QB Patrick Mahomes. The trade cost them both last year and this year’s #1 picks in a deal with the Bills. The Redskins traded for Smith to replace free agent veteran Kirk Cousins who has been franchised the past three years and will test NFL Free agency this March. Negotiations with Cousins have been stagnant during his franchise label period with no progress related to any long term deal. He will be in high demand by several clubs including the Broncos, Jets, Jaguars and Bills.

The Chiefs added two year cornerback Kendall Fuller who had a breakout 2017 season and has the talent to win the corner spot opposite Pro Bowl corner Marcus Peters. It addresses a major need on the Chiefs defense. The Chiefs now have their own #2 and #3 picks, in addition to the Redskins #3 selection this April

Senior Bowl – QB Prospects, Kyle Lauletta and Mike White Outshine Top Prospects Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield

The Senior Bowl 2018 in Mobile, Alabama are a setting for two highly regarded QBs, Josh Allen of Wyoming and Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma. Both players are ascending prospects and are considered potentially top 5-10 overall selections with strong postseasons. They were outshined by two South QBs, Kyle Lauletta and Mike White who engineered a dominated 45-16 South victory. Richmond QB Kyle Lauletta earned Player-of-the-Game honors, along with receivers D.J. Chark of LSU and Central Florida’s Tre’quan Smith. Lauletta put on a strong performance that moved him into the middle tier of QB prospects in this deep class. Lauletta displayed a strong arm with accurate throws including 3 TD passes.

Western Kentucky QB Mike White looked like an emerging pro prospect off a strong performance after a consistently good week of practices. He has fine size, touch and arm strength with the ability to sit in the pocket and deliver strikes. He is a rising prospect with the talent to surprise. Josh Allen actually played for two shifts of the game after an erratic week of practices. After a subpar start of the game in the first quarter, he came back in the 2nd half and had a strong finish going 9 of 13 passes for 2 TDs. He shows a tenacity NFL clubs look for in a leader. Baker Mayfield went only 3 of 7 before calling it a day. He had a solid week of practices and impressive interviews with a few clubs. His overall showing has him earmarked for the first half of the 1st round.

San Diego St RB Rashaad Penny was our #1 Player to Watch for the Senior Bowl and he did not disappoint. He was one of the main reasons why the South blew out the North. He had an impressive 34-yard run along with a 73-yard TD reception. Penny displayed the speed to run away from defenders at over 220 lbs. with the soft hands to be a three-down pro back. His NFL Combine performance will be watched closely as he continues to ascend the draft charts.

Texas San Antonio DE Marcus Davenport: Davenport came to the Senior Bowl as a rising prospect who scouts wanted to see vs big tackle prospects. He impressed at time, though had a few disappointing periods. He looked to impress in the game on Saturday and made a strong showing. He was very disruptive off the edge and pressured the passer continuously. Though he needs to be more explosion off the snap, he uses his long reach well to separate from blockers and be disruptive with fine closing speed to the passer. He was still able to penetrate despite double teaming at times. He has risen to the first round of the NFL Draft and maybe a top 101-5 selection with a strong NFL Combine.
