Updated Jan. 13

       Frank Coyle

With the key CFP natioinal title game here for Jan. 19, the declaration date has opened for the transfer portal with many top draft selections expected to make decisions on turning pro. Ohio State’s DT Kayden McDonald, LB Arvell Reese has joined safety Caleb Downs as the next blue chip prospects to enter the NFL Draft. Reese and Downs carry top 3-5 grades at this point after outstanding careers in a number of roles in the Buckeyes heralded defense. Wideout Carnell Tate looks to become the next Buckeye receiver to be drafted in the first round.  The Georgia Bulldogs lost linebacker CJ Allen and wideout Zachariah Branch after impressive 2025 performances. OT Spencer Fano of Utah sat out his team’s bowl game after an excellent 2025 performance. He ranks in the top ten selections currently in our new Top 150 pro prospect rankings in DraftInsiders.com current  updated Newsletter.

Underclassmen Dates

With the NFL allowing draft-eligible underclassmen to participate in college all-star games, an early deadline of Jan. 5 gives players an opportunity to submit their petitions for special eligibility to the league sooner.

The traditional deadline for underclassmen to submit a petition to the league is Jan. 14.  An extended deadline of Jan. 23 is exclusively for underclassmen on teams participating in the College Football Playoff National Championship.

The upcoming NFL Draft will attract another strong group of underclassmen. Each year a high number of underclassmen decided to turn pro with 100 prospects annually entering the NFL ranks. With the advent of the NIL and players moving easily in the transfer portal former record number of underclassmen has been safe recently. The deadline period approaches between Jan 5th and Jan. 23rd. Expect many new additions here over the next few days. This draft class will be a very heavy offensive talent group from both the underclassmen and senior classes.

In addition, to the large number of underclassmen entering the pro ranks, many players opted out of their bowl game to prepare for the demanding NFL Draft postseason preparation. Both the All-star weeks and NFL Combine along with the critical pro day events become lasting impressions for a prospects final draft grade. These players have increased in recent years and this is a recent disturbing development with key players ending their college careers prior to their team’s most important postseason bowl game on the agenda.

Jets Close Trade Deadline with Two Major Deals

The NFL trade deadline closed with a bang as the NY Jets took the spotlight with two major deals for their top defensive players. They traded corner Sauce Gardner to the Colts for two #1 picks over the next two drafts plus wideout AD Mitchell, in addition to DT Quinnen Williams to the Cowboys for a future #1 pick, this year’s #2 pick and DT Mazi Smith. Gardner has slipped in recent seasons, playing for the struggling franchise. He is just entering his prime and can recapture his All-Pro status in the first place Colts defense. They paid huge price for the talented veteran to help the struggling Colts secondary. Gardner was one of the few cornerbacks traded over recent weeks and the only one with a Pro Bowl resume. Gardner is a major addition for the Colts porous secondary which needs to step up after showing vulnerability in tight games. They look to retain first place in the AFC South with his addition.

The Jets were not finished – trading Pro Bowl interior lineman Quinnen Williams to Dallas just before the deadline. The Cowboys’ defense has been horrible this season and the addition of Williams to couple with Kenny Clark who came in the Micah Parsons deal in September gives them a potent interior line. Their run defense has been especially poor in recent years. The Cowboys surrendered their #2 pick in April, #1 pick for the NFL Draft 2027 and veteran DT Mazi Smith. The two deals put the Jets in command with two #1 and #2 picks for the NFL Draft 2026 and three #1 picks for the NFL Draft 2027. The two trades are major decision to rebuild for the Jets’ new regime of GM Darren Mougey and HC Aaron Glenn. The 1-7 Jets currently hold the 3rd overall pick in the first round and will be in competition for the first overall selection after surrendering their two best defensive players.

There were many rumors through the fall related to veteran players availability. Salary cap issues and agreed value limited many potential trades by most clubs.

Most bidders were playoff contenders in hopes of landing pieces at pressing positions for the second half stretch run. Most traders were rebuilding clubs, hoping to add more draft capital and add draft choices for future NFL Draft classes.

Many deals for draft selections involved in an exchange for late draft choices along with a veteran player.

NFL Trade Deadline Looms In Final Week

Nov. 4
All trading ends for 2025 at 4:00 p.m. est

Nov. 5
Players with at least four previous pension-credited seasons are subject to the waiver system for the remainder of the regular season and postseason.

The NFL trade deadline is approaching with less than one week before the Nov. 4th final day. There have been many rumors through the fall related to veteran players availability. Salary cap issues will factor into any deals with the 2025 cap limited for many clubs.

Most bidders will be playoff contenders with a few possible .500 clubs in that mix entering the 2nd half of the season. Most traders will be rebuilding clubs, hoping to add more draft capital and add draft choices for next April. Phones will be busy, though movement and getting the right fits on value and salary may limit exchanges. Many of the players on this list will be Free agents in March which reduces their value significantly at the November 4th deadline. Deals for draft selections will usually involve an exchange with the value of draft choices increasing as we approach  next April.

Trades this week

Rams made a trade for cornerback Roger McCreary from the Titans. They sent their 5th round pick in 2026 for McCreary and a 6th round selection from the Titans next April.

Patriots moved two defensive veterans, safety Kyle Dugger and edge defender Keion White for late round draft exchanges. Both deals they acquired 6th round picks for the player and a 7th round exchange. Dugger was acquired by the Steelers while the 49ers added White to address their pass rush.

NFL Awards 2024
Josh Allen Wins MVP Award

Coach of the Year – Kevin O’Connell – Vikings

Draft Insiders’ – Frank Coyle / Head scout
www.draftinsiders.com

The Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen was voted the NFL MVP award after an outstanding 2024 performance. He directed the Bills to their 5th consecutive AFC East title followed by impressive postseason wins over the Broncos and Ravens. The Bills lost another dramatic matchup with the Chiefs who moved on to another Super Bowl appearance.

Allen had 41 offensive touchdowns for fourth in the NFL, a 101.4 passer rating for eighth in the league and only six interceptions. He was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week four different times. He also became the first player in NFL history to record at least 25 passing TDs, 10 rushing TDs and one receiving TD in a season.

We will have extensive Senior Bowl & East-West coverage in the February Newsletter

Allen was truly worthy of the award. He lost his top two receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis in the offseason. He worked with a solid group of skill position players behind a very good front line. His combination of powerful arm to drive the ball down the field, strong scrambling where he is capable of running away or over defenders and savvy decision making earned him the coveted award. He clearly did the most with the least among his competitors.

In what was one of the most hotly contested MVP races in recent memory, Allen received 27 of the 50 first-place votes, four more than Jackson, who was selected first-team All-Pro last month. It’s the same voters for MVP and All-Pro, which is why many thought Jackson was the favorite to win what would have been his third MVP award.

Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Leads QB Postseason Records

Frank Coyle/ Staff

The KC Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes attempts to become the first QB in Super Bowl history to win three consecutive titles this postseason. Mahomes has already won three titles over with the current back-to-back titles, setting up the opportunity to set a new NFL record. He has been incredible leading the Chiefs in the postseasons with 15 victories in his short career. His .833 winning percentage ranks the highest of both current and former veteran starters. Last season, his 15 postseason wins passed Terry Bradshaw, John Elway, Peyton Manning, Brett Farve and Ben Rothlisberger. His next win ties him with Joe Montana for 2nd place all-time behind only Tom Brady. Brady has an amazing 35 postseason wins with 7 Super Bowl titles, with most as a New England Patriot. Brady lost two SB games to the NY Giants, both when he left the field with only minutes to go with the Patriots in the lead, only to fall to dramatic performances by the Giant’s Eli Manning in the closing seconds.

NFL Team Poll

Ranking /Record /Team

#1 – 11-1 Chiefs
Chiefs beat the turkey Raiders on Thanksgiving. They know how to win close games and Mahomes gives them a clear advantage in big spots. Host the Chargers in a pivotal AFC West battle with first place in the balance and possible #1 AFC seating.

#2 – 11-1 Lions
Lions edged the Bears and host the Packers this Thursday night. They have been dominant most of the season and the team to beat in the NFC and possible #1 seating.

#3 – 10-2 Bills
Bills bashed the 49ers behind another great Josh Allen performance. Travel to LA to face a hungry Rams club which is backed to the wall to win the final month of the season.

#4 – 10-2 Eagles
The Eagles beat the Ravens in a gutsy performance. They continue to peak entering the final month. Host the struggling Panthers looking to open a three game NFC East lead.

#5 – 9-3 Steelers
Steelers outslugged the Bengals in another AFC North battle. Their defense showed a few kinks vs Joe Burrow. Russell Wilson continues to impress in a comeback performance.

#6 – 10-2 Vikings
Vikings won their 5th straight game, beating the Cardinals. They continue to press the Lions for the NFC North title. Host the Falcons in a pivotal NFC matchup.

#7 – 8-4 Chargers
Chargers made a terrific comeback vs the Bengals in a wild shootout. Host the Ravenls this week in a great matchup between Justin Herbert and Lamar Jackson.

#8 – 8-5 Ravens
Ravens fell again vs the Steelers. Travel to LA to face the hot Chargers on Monday night in a pivotal AFC matchup which will affect both divisions.

#9 – 8-5 Commanders
The Commanders bounced back vs the Titans. Get their bye week to prepare for a stretch run. Rookie Daniels has directed this offense nicely.

#10 – 8-5 Texans
The hot and cold Texans just edged the Jaguars in latest game. Hold a two-game lead in the AFC South entering their bye week. Young CJ Stroud needs to regroup and cut his mistakes entering the final month.

#11 – 9-3 Packers
The Packers beat the Dolphins on Thanksgiving. Face divisional leading Lions in Detroit on Thursday. This may decide if they can make the playoffs in the toughest NFC division.

#12 – 8-5 Broncos
The aggressive Broncos rode the hot hand of rookie sensation Bo Nix for another victory. They get their bye week to reload for a run at a wild card position this postseason.

#13 – 7-5 Seahawks
Seahawks outlasted the Jets to gain NFC West leadership. Travel to Arizona in a battle for first place.

#14 – 6-6 Rams
Rams have reached the .500 mark after a slow start. They host the Bills in a matchup which may define their season. QB Matthew Stafford and Josh Allen can put on a show.

#15 – 6-6 Cardinals
The Cardinals lost a heartbreaker to the Vikings. They host the Seahawks looking to avenge an earlier lost where they scored only 2 FGs.

#16 – 6-6 Falcons
The Falcons extended their losing streak to three games. Travel to Minnesota looking to stay alive in the playoff hunt. Starting QB Kirk Cousins could get a hook for rookie #1 pick Michael Penix if his mistakes continue to mount.

#17 – 6-6 Bucs
Bucs beat the Cardinals in OT to stay tied for the NFC South leadership. Host the Raiders in a must win situation to keep pace for the divisional title with most likely only one South club making the postseason.

#18 – 5-7 Dolphins
Dolphins lost to Packers on Thanksgiving breaking their two game winning streak. Host the Jets for their first matchup of a soft late schedule where they are still capable of surprising with a healthy QB Tua.

#19 – 6-7 Colts
The Colts won another lost game vs the Patriots. They enter their bye week hoping to regroup and make a run in the soft AFC South. They lack consistency and firepower and look to erratic Richardson to become the catalyst for a late playoff run.

#20 – 5-7 49ers
The 49ers were crushed by the Bills on Sunday night which dampens their playoff hopes even in the weak NFC West. Their key offensive injuries may limited their attack. Host the Bears in a battle of also runs.

#21 – 4-8 Bengals
The Bengals lost yet another wild game, this time to the Steelers despite an amazing performance by QB Joe Burrow. Their defense has allowed an incredible 340 points, passed only by the inept Panthers in the league. Travel to Big D for a matchup of two of the most disappointing teams in the league.

22 – 5-7 Cowboys
The Cowboys are on a bogus two-game winning streak in hope they make a desperate run at a wild card  playoff position. Host the potent Bengals who will press their overrated defense to the fullest.

#23 – 4-8 Saints
Saints lost to the Rams in a close contest. Travel to Metlife to face the collapsing GMen. New HC Darren Rizzi has this club playing hard, though their lack of firepower in big spots has limited their chances.

#24 – 4-8 Bears
The Bears came up short vs the Lions on Thanksgiving for their 5th straight loss. Rookie QB Caleb Williams is paying well and hopes to continue his resurgence on their West coast visit to the 49ers.

#25 – 3-9 Browns
Browns batted the Broncos to the wire, though lost on two pick sixes by QB Jameis Winston. They are the lowest scoring offense in the AFC and are expected to make major changes this offseason. Travel to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers after beating them just a few weeks ago.

#26 – 3-10 Patriots
The young lost another close game this time to the Colts. They continue to struggle and get their bye week to prepare for a difficult final month which probably guarantees them a top 3 selection in the NFL Draft 2025.

#27 – 3-9 Jets
Jets got spanked by Geno Smith and the Seahawks last week. They continue to fall apart at the seams. Travel to Miami hoping to spoil any long shot playoff aspirations of the Dolphins.

#28 – 3-9 Titans
The Titans got smashed by the Commanders. Host the Jaguars in a battle for the basement in the AFC South. Titans have made little improvement over the 2024 season.

#29 – 3-9 Panthers
Panthers fought the Bucs to overtime, though came up short again. Young QB Bryce Young is gaining valuable experience. Travel to Philly for a major opportunity to take the next step.

#30 – 2-10 Jaguars
Jaguars were edged by the Texans last week for their 5th straight loss. Go to Nashville looking to get out of the basement vs the Titans.

#31 – 2-10 Giants
The Giants lost on Thanksgiving in Big D failing to finish many drills which could have made a difference. Host the Saints this week with QB Drew Lock at the helm again.

#32 – 2-10 Raiders
The Raiders lost their 8th straight game vs the Chiefs. Travel to Tampa playing out the string in another disastrous season which will cause major turnovers this offseason.

He went on to become their best QB in franchise history and won a pair of Super Bowls, beating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots twice. He earned Super Bowl MVP honors in each game. He made some of the greatest clutch throws in the annals of the Super Bowl which were pivotal on the Giants SB titles. The Selection Committee will reduce this group again to 15 finalists, who will be announced in December. NFL 2025 Trade Period – starts March 12, 2025

Commanders Aquire Saints CB Marshon Lattimore
Lions Acquire Edge ZaDarius Smith
Cowboys Deal for Wideout Jonathan Mingo

The NFL trade deadline has closed after a rush of moves by General Managers mostly from contenders to strengthen rosters for the playoff push. There has been the expected active period over recent weeks which could finish with  several deals which can have huge effects on the NFL playoff picture. The incumbent KC Chiefs have already benefited from their major addition of wideout DeAndre Hopkins who has provided scoring impact in his first games.

The Jets added receiver Davante Adams has connected with former teammate QB Aaron Rodgers to score the winning TD in their victory over the Texans.

Other veteran receivers like Chris Olave, Darius Slayton, Christian Kirk, Calvin Ridley, Treylon Burks, Kendrick Bourne, Brandin Cooks, Michael Thomas, Adam Thielen and Eli Moore drew interest in the final days, though were not moved by their current clubs. Olave and Kirk sustained recent injuries which may eliminate them from deals. Teams like the Bucs, Bills, Chargers, Steelers, Eagles, Commanders and Texans will entertain receivers for the stretch run in competitive conferences where every win makes a difference for a postseason berth.

Receivers DeAndre Hopkins, Davante Adams, Diontae Johnson and Jonathan Mingo have changed uniforms in hope of becoming playmakers. Hopkins and Adams have provided short term impact to the Chiefs, Jets and Ravens offense that were all in need for new playmakers.

Veteran defensive players like edge defenders Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith, and Baron Browning were traded for late selections within the last 24 hours, hoping to provide pass pressure in their contending team’s pursuit of the postseason.

Many of these veterans are high priced players and possible free agents this postseason. Playoff clubs will be limited to the waiver wire and practice squads to add new players through the NFL 2024 season.
