NFL Salary Cap 2023 Sets New Record

NFL Salary Cap 2023 Sets New Record
New Franchise and Transitional Tag Figures

Frank Coyle/ Publisher

NFL announced the 2023 salary cap will be a record $224.8 million per club. That’s an increase of 8% from the $208.2 million in 2022.

Prior years were $182.5M in 2021 (Covid adjustment), 198.2M in 2020 and $188.2M in 2019.

NFL teams have until 4 pm est on March 15th to get under the salary cap before the free agency period officially opens.

The Chicago Bears who hold the #1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, also have the most cap space in the league. The Bears are currently just under $91M under the cap, while Atlanta ($56.4M), the NY Giants ($44.2M) and Cincinnati ($43.7M) the next clubs in order.

Conversely, 14 teams are over the cap and will have either restructure or release player (s) prior the March 15th deadline. Another 4 clubs have less than $10M available in cap space currently and will have work to do to be active teams in the Free agent market.

New Orleans at $60.4M and Tampa Bay $55M over the cap have monumental roster restructuring ahead with massive player movement to just get under the new salary cap.

The NFL confirmed the franchise and transition tag numbers for the upcoming year.

Clubs get two franchise tags and one transitional tags each year. The exclusive franchise tag limits the player to only his current team. The standard franchise tag allows a player to negotiate with all teams and sign an offer sheet. If his current team does not match the offer, the new team gives up two 1st-round picks as compensation. The transition tag provides a player’s original team the right to match any offer sheet. There is no compensation if the team does not match.

NFL Divisional Playoff Matchups

NFL Divisional Playoffs

 Saturday, January 21st

Jaguars (9-8) @ Chiefs (14-3)
   4:30 PM est – NBC

Giants (10-7-1) @ Eagles (14-3)
    8:15 PM est – FOX

Sunday, January 22nd

Bengals (13-4) @ Bills (14-3)
    3:00 PM est – CBS

Cowboys (13-5) @ 49ers (13-4)
    6:30 PM est – FOX

The best weekend in sports is the final eight teams in the NFL divisional playoffs. This year we get great matchups again including teams, the Giants and Jaguars who are back in the postseason for the first time in years. Both play on Saturday on the road facing tough assignments with the Giants traveling to Philadelphia and the Jaguars in Kansas City to face the mighty Chiefs. Sunday features two classic matchups with the Cowboys playing at San Francisco in another in a long history between the two NFC rivals. The Bengals face the Bills in Buffalo with two of the best young passers in the game, Joe Burrow and Josh Allen in an expected shootout.

The winners will advance to the Conference Championship games on Jan. 29th with the winners meeting in Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12th in Glendale, Arizona.

NFL Divisional Playoff Matchups – 1/21 and 1/22

Giants (10-7-1) @ Eagles (14-3)

Giants are peaking at the right time. They have had huge problems with Eagles in recent years and must continue their recent strong play behind a hot Danny Jones and tough Saquon Barkley. Their aggressive defense has been very opportunistic and will need to be at the top of their game vs the potent Eagles attack directed by QB Jalen Hurts. Eagle receivers Smith and Brown are a dangerous tandem that will test the GMens’ secondary which is finally healthy. Gmen continue to surprise as road warriors and find a way to beat their divisional rival.
   Giants 27 – Eagles 24

Jaguars (9-8) @ Chiefs (14-3)

The student meets the master in the Trevor Lawrence vs Patrick Mahomes confrontation. The Chiefs hold the #1 seat and well rested to take on the upstart Jaguars. Mahomes is magical and is dangerous in any situation. He will test the young Jax defense which must be composed early to create a game. Lawrence is a rare talent in his own right despite only completing his 2nd season. He will need a healthy guard Brandon Scherff to help neutralize sack artist DT Chris Jones.
  Chiefs 38 – Jaguars 21

Sunday, January 22nd

Bengals (13-4) @ Bills (14-3)

Great matchup with elite young passers Joe Burrow and Josh Allen and between divisional winners. Burrow looks to return to the SB, though will be under heavy pressure from an aggressive Bills defense. Buffalo HC Sean McDermott will pressure the weak injured Bengals line and harass Burrow coming out of the locker room. The Bills’ Allen has responded with huge postseason performances and looks to get their offense back on track after several unnerving weeks due to the serious Damar Hamlin injury.
Bill 31 – Bengals 24

Cowboys (13-5) @ 49ers (13-4)

Long history of playoff games between these two NFC clubs, including the 49ers’ 23-17 postseason victory last January. 49ers’ offense has new leaders in rookie QB Brock Purdy and Pro Bowl runner Christian McCaffrey joining TE George Kittle and WR Deebo Samuel. Purdy is the Cinderella story of the year as ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ directing this potent attack like a seasoned veteran. 49ers defense ranks with any unit in the league and will pressure Boys’ QB Dak Prescott who is coming off his best performance of the year. That matchup may hold the key to the outcome here. Boys defense must step up and harass the rookie Purdy with defenders, Parson and Lawrence being key performers for any positive Dallas outcome.
49ers 27- Cowboys 17

Safety Damar Hamlin Improves Significantly – NFL Regular Season Final Weekend Schedule

Safety Damar Hamlin Improves Significantly

NFL Season Final Weekend Schedule

The NFL announced today that Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin, who has been hospitalized at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center since Monday, has had substantial improvement in his condition. Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest during Monday’s game which had huge impact on the players, coaches and fans who witnessed the traumatic collision. Though he still remains in critical condition, he has made improvement in 72 hours which is very encouraging. Currently, they have removed his breathing tube and continues to make amazing improvement. He has spoken to family and teammates and is addressing team via Facetime. The miracle continues to unfold with prayers for a return to full health from the nation and NFL community.

The Bills host AFC East rival, the Patriots Sunday afternoon this home field advantage through the conference playoffs at stake, along with the Patriots fighting for the final AFC playoff berth.

The NFL announced that the Week 17 Buffalo Bills at Cincinnati Bengals game will not be resumed and has been cancelled. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed all clubs of his decision on Thursday, after speaking with the Bills, the Bengals and NFL Players Association leadership.

“This has been a very difficult week,” Goodell said. “We continue to focus on the recovery of Damar Hamlin and are encouraged by the improvements in his condition as well as the tremendous outpouring of support and care for Damar and his family from across the country. We are also incredibly appreciative of the amazing work of the medical personnel and commend each and every one of them.”

Key factors in arriving at this decision:

Not playing the Buffalo-Cincinnati game to its conclusion will have no effect on which clubs qualify for the postseason. No club would qualify for the postseason and no club will be eliminated based on the outcome of this game.

The AFC Championship Game will be played at a neutral site if the participating teams played an unequal number of games and both could have been the number one seed and hosted the game had all AFC clubs played a full 17-game regular season. Those circumstances involve Buffalo or Cincinnati qualifying for the game as a road team and are listed below:

The NFL regular season closing weekend will determine the final three divisional winners with the Bengals/Ravens matchup for the AFC North title and the Titans/Jaguars deciding the AFC South winner key games.

The Eagles hold a one game lead over the Cowboys in the NFC East and host the Giants. A win and they clinch the divisional title. Three East teams, the Eagles, Cowboys and Giants are the only division with multiple clubs already in the postseason.  On Sunday night, the Packers-Lions matchup closes out the season with the winner qualifying for the final wild card spot. Both teams made strong pushes over the second half of the season to get to the .500 mark entering their final contest.
