NFL Sets New Salary Cap at $255.4 Million
Huge $30 Million Cap Increase Per Team

The NFL has surprisingly set the new salary cap for 2024 at $255.4M, an incredible $30.6 million increase from the 2023 team cap. That is the biggest cap increase since the salary cap started in 1994 when the original salary cap was only $34.6 million. This increase was a surprise to most NFL executives who expected an estimate in the $20 million dollar area. The announcement was also earlier than any year with the annual new cap always at the end of February. The recent caps since the Covid years have been held down by the paybacks.

This huge increase reflects the new television money where the NFL has expanded on multiple TV streaming platforms. The salary cap has grown at a steady pace until the Covid pandemic occurred. Future increases will probably be in the expected $25M range.

Teams over the salary cap will get some relief this year with 8 clubs in the red currently. They must be in positive cap money for the March 13^th Free agency opening day. This offseason may see the biggest turnover of veteran releases on high contracts for teams to operate in the early FA period which starts March 13th. Tender offers will increase over expectations, in addition to proven performance escalators and rookie contracts.

We are in the Franchise and Transitional tag period which numbers of veterans could increase with the enormous higher cap in place. Teams are diligently combing their roster to restructure veteran contracts to create more salary cap space. The Saints restructured QB Derek Carr’s contract saving $23M for the new cap period.

The upcoming free agency period will be a pivotal time for NFL teams to reload for the 2024 season. The increased cap and restructured veteran contracts can make an amazing new makeover for clubs to compete for the NFL playoffs. The early negotiating window allows teams to speak to free agents and sign them within the first days of the free agency period. It will change the NFL landscape tremendously along with the Trading period which begins the same day. Those additions and losses will be the foundation of rosters entering the important NFL Draft.

Feb. 20 – Beginning today through 4:00 p.m., New York time on March 5, clubs may designate Franchise or Transition Players.

March 5 Prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, deadline for clubs to designate Franchise or Transition Players.

March 11-13 – During the period beginning at 12:00 noon, New York time, on March 11 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m., New York time, on March 13, clubs are permitted to contact, and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become unrestricted free agents upon the expiration of their 2023 player contracts at 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 13.

During the above two-day negotiating period, a prospective UFA who is not represented by an NFLPA Certified Contract Advisor (“Unrepresented Player”) is permitted to communicate directly with a new club’s front office officials (excluding the head coach and other members of the club’s coaching staff) regarding contract negotiations. The club is responsible for confirming the player’s status as an Unrepresented Player.

No prospective unrestricted free agent is permitted to execute a contract with a new club until 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 13.

The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine begins on Monday, February 26^th with team interviews, physicals, medical exams and media interviews. The athletic testing and field drills get underway on Thursday, Feb 29th. The events will once again take place at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis. NFL Combine 2024 – February 26- March 4 – Indianapolis, In.

The NFL Network channel will televise the NFL Combine in its entirety. Every NFL front office personnel will canvas the workouts. Players will go through extensive testing on their athletic, intellectual and psychological abilities by the staffs of NFL clubs. Prospects will follow the Combine with school Pro Day workouts. The NFL Combine gives players a chance to impress pro scouts on a level playing field vs most of their top competitors.

With increasing interest in the NFL Draft, the scouting combine has grown in scope and significance, allowing personnel directors to evaluate upcoming prospects in a standardized setting. Its origins have evolved from the National, BLESTO and Quadra Scouting organizations in 1977 to the media event it has become today.

Pro day workouts will be held at various college facilities where the running surfaces can have a variety of compositions effecting their timed results. Pro Days are not standardized with all the NFL Combine events, though the scouts request a broader series of events at their scheduled events.       

On average, there are approximately 75-100+ NFL Combine players who will go undrafted while on average, 50+ non-invited NFL Combine players are drafted each April. Athletes attend by invitation only. An athlete’s performance during the NFL Combine can affect their draft status and salary, and their career. The NFL Draft has popularized the term “workout warrior”, whereby an athlete’s ‘draft stock’ is increased based on superior measurable qualities such as size, speed, and strength, despite having an average or sub-par college career.

The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine begins on Monday, February 26th. The athletic testing and field drills get underway on Thursday, Feb 29th. The events will once again take place at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis. Television coverage can be found on the NFL Network.

   The NFL released the list of players invited to the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. A total of 321 prospects were invited to attend in this year’s NFL Combine. Over the past decade, over 85% of all players that were drafted attended the NFL Combine.
 

Chiefs Win Back to Back Super Bowls

The Kansas City Chiefs won SB LVIII in overtime on a dramatic drive by QB Patrick Mahomes 25-22. It was back to back SB titles for KC behind the guidance of HC Andy Reid and the brilliant Mahomes who won his third MVP game award in the process.

Mahomes worked his magic one more time in OT after the 49ers took a lead on their first possession with a FG. Mahomes directed the Chiefs on a long drive including a couple impressive scrambles before hitting ex-Jet Mecole Hardman on a short outlet TD pass to secure another title. TE Travis Kelce had a strong game, especially in the 2nd half with 9 receptions for 93 yards with Taylor Swift and her entourage cheering him and the Chiefs through the drama.

The KC defense was brilliant again directed by DC Steve Spagnuolo. Chief defenders, DT Chris Jones, edge George Karloftis, corner Trent McDuffie and backer Nick Bolton spearheaded the aggressive defense which held every team in the regular and postseasons to under 28 points.

Ironically, the Chiefs were the underdog in this SB matchup for the third consecutive postseason game. That’s’ incredible for a club which won back to back titles and their 3rd championship in five years. Every win was away from Arrowhead Stadium in KC with the SB victory in Las Vegas the home of their arch rival, Raiders’ home turf.

Chiefs’ back to back titles was the first repeat since the 2003-2004 Patriots. They will attempt to be the first team ever to win three consecutive SB titles next season. That makes the 2024 postseason were interesting with the Free agency period beginning in mid-March and the NFL Draft 2024 in late April pivotal in maintaining and building their roster for the record

Offense

 QB Devin Leary, Kentucky, 6010, 215 moved well in the pocket and threw well on the move. He was accurate through the intermediate zones. He needs a strong game performance. QB Austin Reed, Western Kentucky, 6007, 233 spread the ball around nicely and went through his progressions. He anticipates routes well and delivers the ball with good touch and timing.

RB Frank Gore Jr., Southern Miss, 5071, 199 is a compact runner with power and elusiveness. He will probably be the feature back here with well rounded playmaking abilities. RB Jaden Shirden, Monmouth University, 5074, 189 sudden scatback moves easily and has the explosiveness to run away from defenders. Looking for reps in this game. RB Deshaun Fenwick, Oregon State, 6006, 225 ran hard inside and made yardage after contact. He is primed for a strong game performance.

WR Jalen Coker, Holy Cross, 6012, 218 displayed great body control and a big receiving radius. He is effective in the red zone and has soft hands. WR Casey Washington, Illinois, 6006, 197 shows fine length to win the 50/50 passes. Looked sharp in practices and hopes to transform that to the game. WR Malik Washington, Virginia, 5081, 192 is a compact receiver with quickness and nice deep speed. He displayed good hands and run after the catch ability in practices.

TE Zach Heins, S Dakota St, 6061, 264 displayed reliable hands and route sound routes. He is effective in the middle zones and is a strong blocker. TE Isaac Rex, BYU, 6050, 250 moved easily and showcased soft hands and sound routes. He adjusts well in his routes with the ability to sit in the openings.

OT Walter Rouse, Oklahoma, 6054, 319 moved and slide consistently well with nice hand usage. He looked sharp in pass protection. OG KT Leveston, Kansas State, 6035, 337 has a strong frame and base with good length. He utilizes his fine functional strength to move defenders out of the hole. OG Christian Mahogany, Boston College, 6024, 318 is a powerful blocker who locks on and gets consistent movement in the run game. Needs some work in pass protection.

Defense

Edge Trajan Jeffcoat, Arkansas, 6040, 266 checked in ripped and prototypical size for the outside. He showed quickness on the snap and fine use of his long arms and strong hands. Edge Eyabi Okie-Anoma, Charlotte, 6037, 253 was explosive on the snap and bend the edge nicely. He pressured QBs to move them consistently off their spot. Edge Mohamed Kamara, Colorado State, 6013, 252 showed deceptive power to get into blockers and the quickness to continue through the arc.

DL Fabian Lovett Sr., Florida State, 6033, 307 was quick on the snap to penetrate the middle. He holds the point well. DL Nathan Pickering, Mississippi St, 6026, 300 is a long versatile lineman who keeps blockers off his body. He can bull rush and uses his huge wingspan to deflect passes. DL Khristian Boyd, Northern Iowa, 6021, 320 is a wide body interior lineman who held the point well. He stays alive nicely to be effective between the tackles.

CB Jarrian Jones, Florida State, 6000, 192 is an interesting prospect with length, agility and quickness. He held up nicely in coverage and is competitive on 50/50 passes. CB Dwight McGlothern, Arkansas, 6013, 185 is quick to break on the ball and blanketed receivers in practice. He uses his length well on high ball. CB Qwan’tez Stiggers, Toronto Argonauts, 5113, 203 is eligible here after one season in the CFL. He has a strong frame and built more along safety lines. He has good hips to open and matchup along with good run support skills. S Isaiah Johnson, Syracuse, 6027, 207 is a long defender who can matchup with tight ends and is fluid in coverage to play in all the sub packages.

PK Cam Little, Arkansas, 6007, 173 displayed a strong leg and should earn a draftable 3rd day grade for April.

Senior Bowl Week

Weigh-in and Practices

National Team – Monday

The Senior Bowl week has begun with the usual surprises at the Weigh-in followed by the early practices. The National team worked out in the morning and showcased a strong overall club. The National club featured two highly regarded QBs in Michael Penix Jr., 6024, 212 and Bo Nix, 6017, 218. Both adjusted nicely to the setting and took command immediately. Penix throws an accurate deep ball along with a strong arm. Nix moved well in the pocket and was accurate and good timing to hit receivers in stride. Runners, MarShawn Lloyd, 5091,217 and Rasheen Ali, 5113, 204 had an impressive first day practice. Floyd displayed quick footwork to slide in the hole, change directions and a quick burst into the second level. Ali ran strong with the burst to get into the secondary. He also caught the ball well. Wideouts, Devontez Walker, 6014, 197 and Roman Wilson, 5104, 186 shined in the Tuesday morning practice. Walker was smooth into his routes with the burst to separate. He worked well from the outside and the slot. Wilson ran crisp routes and showed natural speed to run vertical routes. He moved easily through coverage and separated well. TE Theo Johnson, 6060, 257 displayed soft hands and fine length. He moved well in routes with good footwork to create separation and provide a sure target. OT Taliese Fuaga, 6057, 332 was imposing physically and moved easily in his slide and into the second level. He has great length and core strength that was evident on every snap. He pancaked edge defender Laiatu Latu in a one-on-one drill. He impressed scouts immediately and looks NFL ready. OC Jackson Powers-Johnson, 6032, 334 showed power and quickness with heavy hands to control nose tackles. He was quick to strike defenders with the mobility to adjust and reset nicely. RT Roger Rosengarten, 6054, 311 displayed sound technique and the ability to anchor and adjust to secondary moves. He helped his cause in the first practice.

DL Gabe Hall, 6056, 298 flashed quickness and strong hands to win early on the down. He moved around the front and gained penetration consistently. DL Marshawn Kneeland, 6030, 268 showed power as a bull rusher. He held the edge well in run support and impressed overall. Edge Laiatu Latu, 6046, 261 was explosive on the snap and was flexible thru the rush. He used his hands well to keep blockers off his body. Edge Brandon Dorlus, 6031, 272 was active from the outside. He held the edge well in run support. LB Adisa Isaac, 6045, 250 was quick off the edge flashing power and strong hands to win vs bigger blockers. He shows quickness to move along the line to pursue to finish. LB Payton Wilson, 6041, 234 was active as expected. He reads plays quickly with the athleticism to beat blockers to the hole. He uses his hands well to separate and slip blockers to finish. CB Quinyon Mitchell, 6003, 195 was impressive in coverage. He moves easily and opens his hips quickly to break on the ball. He ran stride for stride with top receivers with the instincts to locate the ball and compete for the pass. S Josh Proctor, 6014, 198 shows NFL size and athleticism. He ability to cover is still raw and needs work, though his athleticism allows him to make up for mistakes.
