Blockbuster Trades Shake up the First Round

 49ers, Dolphins and Eagles Move in the Top 12 Selections

The peak of the Pro Day workout schedules continues with a few major trades recently during the height of the workout season that shuffled the top draft selections. The Dolphins set off the shift when they traded the 3^rd overall selection to the 49ers who held the 12^th overall selection for multiple addition future #1 draft choices. The Dolphins then traded the newly acquired 12^th overall pick for the Eagles first round choice, the 6^th overall selection. The Dolphins surrendered one of the #1 picks they received from the 49ers to land the 6^th overall pick.

These moves were key statements about the teams involved – namely that the Dolphins and Eagles have decided to past on the top 3-4 QB prospects. The major trades were completed within minutes of each other with the Dolphins and Eagles transaction discussed over the past two weeks. Both trades transpired as the BYU pro day just began. BYU QB Zach Wilson had a very impressive workout and most likely solidified the 2^nd overall selection behind generational QB Trevor Lawrence. With the 49ers at #3 selection, they will likely choose between Marc Jones, Justin Fields or Trey Lance. QBs could fall in the first four selection with the Falcons at #4 in the market for a QB and either Jones, Fields or Lance high on their list. The top 4 QB prospects could come off the board in the top four selections with the 5^th prospect not out of the question of going in the top 10 choices or higher.

The Dolphins reset at the 6^th overall pick and will most likely get a one of the top three non QB prospects. The 49ers are basically saying they love the top 3 QBs and were willing to pay the price – three #1 selections over the next three drafts. Do not rule out the 49ers moving up one spot with the Jets if the price is not outrageous. The Falcons also could be interested in moving up if the #4 QB is not as high as their 2^nd or 3^rd prospect.

Jets hold the #2 overall pick and have been debating using for their new starting QB (Z Wilson) or trading QB Sam Darnold in deals with the Seahawks for starters, Russell Wilson or Texans Deshaun Watson. Seattle is still a possibility with HC Pete Carroll interested with long ties to USC and liking Darnold as a reclamation project for the right deal. The Texans will most likely have a difficult time trading Watson at this time with the recent claims of multiple abuse incidents still pending. In addition, the NFL office could suspend Watson if specific charges including abuses prior to an expected long court battle. Teams still interested in moving up for a top QB would be the Panthers and Broncos along with the Lions being a surprise bidder.

The pro days of 2021 have become more elaborate due to the cancellation of the NF Combine in February because of the ongoing Pandemic. Pro day drills have been very inclusive for NFL personnel men to get the broadest view of a prospect in March and April with the most update information related to his physical skills and in person scouting.

Top Prospects Featured in Upcoming Pro Day TV Workouts

With the NFL Combine 2021 cancelled this year, the Pro Days have become more important than ever. NFL scouts, coaches and general managers continue to canvas the country to prepare for the NFL Draft. College pro days have become more extensive in their drills to replicate the standard drills at the annual NFL Combine. Clubs have trying to get the most updated information on prospects with so many players having the short playing resumes collectively that makes this draft a risky selection process.

NFL teams will attend college campuses this offseason to catchup on prospects with back film work, in addition to  workouts, interviews and medical updates. Draft Insiders’ staff will attend many college Pro Days. We did attend several spring football drills last year scouting upcoming prospects along with interviewing many coaches.

Many of the top prospects will workout over the next few weeks that will probably have a huge impact of the early rounds this April. This updated schedule is expanded and updated schedule that will be fluid according to the Pandemic situation and college settings.

Pro Day Schedule 2020

The pro day schedule is below. In most cases, it is the final opportunity for pro prospects to impress NFL scouts. Players that were not invited to the NFL Combine or play in a postseason All-star games, showcase their skills most likely at the friendly confines of our college facilities. Many injured players get one final chance to show their talent and level of rehab. Some obscure players jump out at workouts and leave a lasting impression on scouts to earn a late selection in the NFL Draft which is only weeks away. 2019 NFL Draft – Pro Day Schedule

On the eve of the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine, the Pro Day schedule was announced and begins the day after the week long combine in Indianapolis. The process for the 2019 NFL Draft continues up to the event on April 25^th thru the 27^th. Coaches, personal men and scouts turn their attention to the NFL Combine starting Tuesday Feb 26^th thru March 4th with the pro day workouts starting the following week. The Pro Days are not as comprehensive as the NFL Combine, though they address the important events and update the vital medical information and rehab process. NFL teams provide key decision-makers to most of these events as the critical final part of the scouting process.

This year’s pro days are listed below by date. Some schools will book a 2nd Pro Day usually in April if they have injured players.

NFL Combine 2019 Announces Invitation List

QB Kyler Murray Faces Important NFL Combine Decision

Former Oklahoma QB Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray was included on the official list of invitees for the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine. Murray has already declared for the NFL Draft 2019 and he will most likely have to pick between the NFL and MLB where he was first-round pick of the Oakland Athletics. Murray wants to become a first-round pick in this year’s NFL draft, but needs to accept the invitation and attend the combine. The A’s have already made a big push to convince Murray to pick baseball over football and they still expect him to attend spring training. The reporting date for spring training actually begins before the NFL Combine on Feb. 15. Murray is at the crossroads and will either miss critical time in spring training for the A’s or bypass the NFL Combine workout in early March which would create a major conflict of dates for any two sport participation. He is expected to announce a decision related to the NFL Combine soon, though he still insists he wants to play both sports. That has never proven successful for any prospect especially with QB ambitions and his delay beyond this winter could actually hurt his career potential in either sport.

The NFL released a list of 338 players who will attend the NFL Scouting Combine which gets underway in Indianapolis on February 26^th. The list includes extensive players from the Power Five Conferences with 261 of the 338 invitations going to prospects from those schools.

 Mississippi State DT Jeffrey Simmons and Colorado State wide receiver Preston Williams were not invited to the event after personal conduct rules infractions. Simmons is considered an early first round prospect while Williams is graded as solid early middle round player.

2018 Pro Day Schedule

The NFL Combine 2018 is only a day old and the College Pro Day Schedule is out. It begins tomorrow with the national champion, the Alabama Crimson Tide holding their Pro Day. The Tide has actually held more than 1 Pro Day at times according to the injury status of certain players.

Different colleges will post additional Pro Days and we will add to the current schedule. Some teams will add a 2nd Pro Day if injuries or weather interfere with the original event.

The NFL Scouting Combine – February 27 – March 5, 2018

The 2018 NFL Scouting Combine is here with the early part of the process underway with 336 draft-eligible players in attendance. This has become an annual event in Indianapolis, where they will go through the gauntlet of team and media interviews, physical and medical testing, and more. The results usually have a huge impact on their status for the upcoming NFL Draft.

On this list are all of the top prospects in the draft, as well as many players who will inevitably go undrafted. After all, the NFL Draft has just 256 selections, and there will be additional players who are selected despite not being invited to Indy.

NFL 2018 Scouting Combine

The best college football players are invited to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. This year 336 players will show up for extensive testing over a week as a critical part of the scouting progress for the NFL Draft. Top NFL Executives, coaching staffs, Player Personnel departments and medical personnel from all 32 NFL teams will be on hand to evaluate the nation’s top college football players eligible for the upcoming NFL Draft. This intense, four-day job interview is an exciting time for the athletes and a vital step in achieving their dreams of playing in the NFL.

With increasing interest in the NFL draft, the scouting combine has grown in scope and significance, allowing personnel directors to evaluate upcoming prospects in a standardized setting. Its origins have evolved from the National, BLESTO and Quadra Scouting organizations in 1977 to the media event it has become today.

The NFL Combine 2018 features the national champion Alabama who has the biggest group, with 14 players invited. They are followed by Ohio St (11), Georgia and LSU (10), Florida St and Miami (9) with Penn St (8), Washington (7) and Texas (6) and Oklahoma (6) each. On average, there are 110 NFL Combine players who will go undrafted while on average, 35 non-invited NFL Combine players will be drafted in April.

Athletes attend by invitation only. An athlete’s performance during the NFL Combine can affect their draft status and salary, and their career. The NFL Draft has popularized the term “workout warrior”, whereby an athlete’s “draft stock” is increased based on superior measurable qualities such as size, speed, and strength, despite having an average or sub-par college career.

* Select players from any Group may arrive one day prior to their scheduled date listed above in order to assist with medical scheduling. This will be based on flight schedules and medical tests only and no players arriving early will have advanced contact with teams.

How are players selected for the NFL Combine?
Participants are determined annually by a Selection Committee. The Directors of both National and BLESTO scouting services, which combined represent twenty-five NFL teams, are joined by members of various NFL player personnel departments to form the committee. The participating NFL executives can rotate on a yearly basis, and remain anonymous. ALL eligible players are reviewed and voted on by the committee members. Each athlete receiving the necessary number of votes, by position, is then extended an invitation. While it is not a perfect science, the goal of the committee is to invite every player that will be drafted in the ensuing NFL Draft.
