The Football Writers Association of America announced the preseason watch list for the 2022 Outland Trophy, recognizing 89 returning standout interior linemen representing all 10 Division I FBS conferences and independents. The 2022 season will close with the award’s 77th anniversary and the watch list offers a talented field of players to accompany two returning FWAA All-Americans.

The recipient of the 2022 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards, live on ESPN on Thurs., Dec. 8. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 11, 2023.

Atop the list are two returning FWAA All-Americans, Baylor center Jacob Gall and Michigan center Olusegun Oluwatimi, each a second-team All-America selection last year. Gall, a redshirt senior, is one of three Baylor players on the list, tops in nation among the 67 teams represented along with Clemson and defending national champion Georgia. Oluwatimi, now a graduate student, will be in the middle of Michigan’s offensive line this fall after transferring from Virginia, where he guided the country’s third-leading offense up front, one that averaged 516.3 yards per game.

Like Baylor, Clemson and Georgia’s three nominees are split between the offensive and defensive lines. The Bulldogs (first, 10.2 ppg) and Tigers (second, 14.8) were the top two scoring defenses in 2021. Returning off the Bulldogs’ stalwart defense that was second in rushing and total defense and included 2021 Outland Trophy winner Jordan Davis at defensive tackle, is his likely replacement Jalen Carter. The junior was a second-team All-SEC pick by the conference coaches last year despite playing behind two first-round NFL draft picks (Davis and fellow tackle Devonte Wyatt). Carter is joined by redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Broderick Jones and senior guard Warren Ericson.

Cincinnati, which qualified for the playoff with its standout defense a year ago, has two players on the list but both are on offense. Jake Renfro, a junior center, will guide the Bearcats’ front with senior offensive tackle Dylan O’Quinn on the outside. The pair of players from Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin led the Big Ten’s list of 11 players from eight different schools, second only to the SEC. Three of its 11 are defensive tackles – redshirt senior Jacob Slade of Michigan State, senior PJ Mustipher of Penn State and senior nose Keeanu Benton of Wisconsin.

Boise State, BYU, Miami, Notre Dame, Oregon, Pitt, Troy, USC and Utah also have two players on the list. The Atlantic Coast Conference had 11 players with the Big 12 and Pac-12 each with 10 followed by the American Athletic, Mountain West and Sun Belt Conferences plus the Independents with six each. Conference USA has five selections and the Mid-American Conference four. There are 29 offensive tackles on this year’s list, just ahead of 25 defensive tackles to go with 18 centers and 17 guards. Just over half of the 131 Football Bowl Subdivision schools – 67 – are represented on the list.

The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are a part of the annual FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects a 26-man first team and eventually the three Outland finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends are not eligible.

The Outland Trophy is the third-oldest major college football award. Created in 1946 when Dr. John Outland presented the FWAA with a financial contribution to initiate the award, the Outland Trophy has been given to the best interior lineman in college football ever since. Dr. Outland, an All-American at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 1890s, eventually took up practice in Kansas City, Mo. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Outland believed linemen did not get the credit they deserved and wanted an award to recognize them.

The Outland Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses college football’s most prestigious awards. The NCFAA’s 25 awards have honored more than 800 recipients since 1935. Visit NCFAA.org for more information.

NFL Supplemental 2022 Draft – Cancelled

The NFL announced this week that the NFL Supplemental 2022 Draft has been cancelled. It is the third straight year which the league cancelled the Supplemental Draft and the seven year in the past decade that no players were chosen.

The NFL Supplemental Draft has long outlived its purpose. With the new transfer rules, third years removed from HS eligibility and Covid exemption season, players have multiple options related to college eligibility and pro qualification.

The days of QBs Bernie Kosar and Steve Walsh, receivers, Cris Carter and Rob Moore and LB Brian Bosworth declaring have long passed as new rules for player eligibility have allowed them many options to extend their college and pro careers. The NFL office should cancel this event permanently after it has shown virtually no high-profile prospects declaring with only a couple of marginal starters over the past two decades.

NFL Team Report – New York Jets

 New York Jets – 4-13 – GM Joe Douglas / Head Coach Robert Saleh – 2nd Year

                1st Round Picks – #4 & #10 selections – 9 total picks 

1. Cornerback – Jets finished with the worst overall defense in the league. Their pass defense was horrible despite some young defenders showing promise. They have made many additions in the draft and FA over the past three years with marginal results. With 9 overall selections, they could address both corner and safety a few times again this year. They probably have a chance to select the top corner at the 4^th overall in Gardner or Stingley. Both could be available at the 10^th selection, though most likely one is gone. They had one of the best safety duos in the game in Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye before an Adams trade and Maye FA loss terminated it. Young corners, Bryce Hall, Brandin Echols and Michael Carter showed interesting potential for their packages, though not the top cover outside man needed. They could draft into this strong class with a few top selections. They will give Kyler Gordon or Kaiir Elam consideration with one of their 2nd round choices.

    2. Edge – The Jets anxiously wait for the return of vet Carl Lawson who was injured in training camp after showing strong edge rushing. He is counted on as a main presence in their front seven. In his absence, the Jets lacked playmakers and were among the worst in the league in pressuring the passer. In a strong edge class, they have this a high priority and most likely addressed with one of their top two selections. They are debating Travon Walker, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Jermaine Johnson with their first selection. They like David Ojabo who is falling off an injury and could slide to the early 2nd round where he would be great value at #35.

3. Wide Receiver – The Jets passing game ranked near the bottom of the league. Their receiving corps worked with rookie starting QB Zach Wilson who showed promise over a tough first year learning curve. Rookie wideout Elijah Moore showed big play ability and became a favorite of Wilson. Veteran FA signee Corey Davis had periods, though limited production and struggled with injuries. They lost Jamison Crowder in FA, but like Braxton Berrios for the slot role. Denzel Mims has been a major disappointment over his two seasons and faces a critical camp to define his role in this offense. They need more here and could address this twice with at least one a prime selection. They hope to draft a prospect with one of their top picks and like Garrett Wilson at the 10th selection. They also like Carl Pickens and Christian Watson in the 2nd round.

Insiders’ Insights  
The Jets have been 13-36 during Joe Douglas’s three seasons. He has directed two draft classes with minimal results from the 2020 group. LT Becton, wideout Mims, safety Davis and edge Zuniga all face a tough camp where they have to step up and produce. Last year’s class was a strong group in their initial season. QB Wilson holds the key and shows the talent to take the next step. Rookies, guard Vera-Tucker and Moore were excellent additions for the offense. Runner Michael Carter is a fine 1A type and fine addition. They will continue to build around Wilson. He has new FA tight end CJ Uzomah after the Jets had a season with virtually no production there. Uzomah is an excellent middle zone target. They will look to Connor McGovern to solidify the pivot. LT Mekhi Becton must prove durable and consistent after missing 16 games his first two seasons. Running back is another major need despite Carter. They like Breece Hall with the 35^th selection. GM Douglas signed guard Laken Tomlinson and safety Jordan Whithead to address need areas, in addition to Uzomah. Mike backer CJ Mosley had an outstanding performance. They will pursue an edge defender after another subpar performance rushing the passer. They have not had a double-digit sack defender since 2015. Offense has pressing issues at running back and wide receiver which are earmarked with early round additions. Douglas had an aggressive FA plan and added a few quality changes. Jets hold five of the top 69 picks and 7 of the top 117 selections.

1st Round #4 Pick – Ahmad Gardner – Rare passer will be on the big stage from Day one.
Alternate Pick – Kayvon Thibodeaux – Fast edge rusher can make a difference.

1. Offensive Guard /Center /Tackle – The Cowboys have problems on their line with issues at guard and tackle plus little overall depth. Former Pro Bowlers, LT Tyron Smith and OG Zack Martin returned to previous levels. Center Tyler Biadasz is overmatched inside. LG Williams left in FA and RT La’el Collins was released. They could address this area early and like tackle Bernhard Raimann, center Tyler Linderbaum and guard Zion Johnson and Kenyon Green and will consider them with the #24th selection. In the 2nd and 3rd rounds, they have Tyler Smith, Sean Rhyan, Abraham Lucas and Cole Strange on their short list. Expect them to address this unit twice over the early rounds with only marginal backups on the roster.
2. Defensive End – The Cowboys lost Randy Gregory in FA and have pressing needs opposite DaMarcus Lawrence. They love George Karlaftis and will consider moving up for him. They like David Ojabo who is falling in the first after a pro day Achilles injury. They like DeMarvin Leal and Boye Mafe and they will get strong 2nd day interest. Also, they like Cameron Thomas in the 3rd round. This position is a must with an early selection.
3. Cornerback – The Cowboys have lost young starters Chidobe Awuzie and Bryon Jones in recent years. They have Pro Bowl corner Trevon Diggs along with young unproven. Vets Jourdan Lewis and Anthony Brown were joined by rookies Kelvin Joseph and Nashon Wright with marginal results. They need to add a quality prospect with starting talent. They like Andrew Booth with the #24 pick and hope he falls after minor muscle surgery. He performed at the high level in the ACC and can be a plug and play NFL starter. They also like Roger McCreary and Zyon McCullom on the 2nd day. They have little proven depth and this area must be addressed if they expect to beat playoff caliber clubs. They also have a need at safety.

Insiders’ Insights 
The Cowboys won the weak NFC East only to get bounced out in the Wildcard playoff week. The offense performed poorly in big game situations. QB Dak Prescott returned from a 2020 fractured ankle and performed very well, though had a poor playoff performance. Their highly rated offense relied on a potent passing game along with runners Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Their once powerful offensive line slipped further and is a prime area to be rebuilt through the NFL Draft.  Veteran wideout Amari Cooper was traded to create cap room and sign wideout Michael Gallup. Young CeeDee Lamb becomes the #1 receiver. Their rookie draft class had major impact from their top selection LB Micah Parsons. He provided playmaking ability for an average defense which struggled in many areas. Backer Leighton Vander Esch returns on a one-year deal. They could focus primarily on defense with high choices in this draft, though the offensive line is the highest priority. This class should focus there also especially in the early rounds. They hope to address their secondary and front line and maybe each with a top 100 selection. They could address the corner spot early and maybe by the 2nd round. They still need front four defenders, especially an edge rusher opposite DeMarcus Lawrence who has struggled when getting special attention after another sub 10 sack performance. They love George Karloftis and Andrew Booth with their 24th pick.

  1st Round Pick – Bernhard Raimann – Emerging developed tackle would give this line a plug and play starter.
  Alternate Pick – Zion Johnson – Blue-chip versatile lineman would give this unit a major boost.

Aggressive and passionate and plays hard till the whistle. Good teammate and hard worker. Above average quickness and playing speed and displays a burst to consistently close. Good range sideline-to-sideline with sound angles and the ability to get through traffic and scrape. Top athleticism downhill and laterally with the agility and COD to play in space. Developing core strength at his 240 lbs. which he is beginning to use effectively as a huge hitter. Plays behind his pads and rarely on the ground. Strong active hands and has learned to use them in all facets. Potential to develop into a 3-down backer with improvement in coverage ability. Former safety is a quick study in coverage and capable of being an early three down starter. Reliable run-plugger does a plus job of stopping runs before they can turn into positive yardage. Displays good peripheral vision and decisive in his read/react ability. Goes where his eyes tell him. Takes few false steps and trusts his vision and instincts. Shows awareness and technique to slips blocks well. Maintains good balance with the instincts to react which allows him to play fast. Squares himself up to ball carriers to create an impact and make the tackle. Plays within himself and has been a consistent tackler vs a high level of competition and big games. Capable blitzer with the burst to close, though relies more on power than technique. Consistently slips/sheds blockers in space with a combination of technique and power. Sifts well through trash and tough to get off his feet. Struggles vs big interior blockers and prefers to slip with strong hands and quick feet. Able to disengage and stay on his feet. Though not a quick twitch athlete, he will be a starter in time. In pass coverage, he is proficient in zone and short area currently, though needs development in the deeper zones. Potential to cover faster TE’s up the seam, though not ready now. Good lateral range, though can be exploited by fast backs in space when asked to cover too much ground. Also, shows the versatility to play Sam in the 4-3 set. As a senior, he totaled 142 tackles, 9 TFL, 1 PBU, 3 picks and 2 sacks, starting all 13 games. Earned DPOY and 1st team MWC honors. At the NFL Combine, he weighed in at 239 lbs. and 6’3” with 31 5/8” arms and 10” hands. Ran a 4.63 time with 27 reps and had a 40” VL, 10’9” BJ and did a 4.28 shuttle and 7.06 three cone. It was a very good workout. Top AA and play recognition ability and he is able to contribute early and possibly start. Intelligent and heady and understands assignment football while able to carry them out well. Rising savvy backer and top 50-75 prospect with fast development and the intangibles to make an impact as both a starter and special teams’ performer.

Wide Receiver Prospect

Fast sure handed senior was the go-to guy for the Bisons over his career. Earned first team honors in 2019. Good lean athletic frame with speed and the running skills to be an impact weapon in the NFL. Speed to get deep regularly on the nine route and developing the nuances as a route-runner to separate from coverage and run the full route tree. Good lean muscle development and adequate functional strength, but could benefit from adding more muscle to his frame. Smooth runner moves in a gliding style, yet showed good elusiveness as a runner after the catch with efficient footwork to create space and break the play. Outstanding hand-eye coordination and able to elevate and high point the ball. Strong hands and usually able to maintain control while taking hits. Natural athlete and polished in many critical aspects of play. With experience, he has learned to run better routes with quicker cuts. Able to maintain concentration on making the catch and separate from defenders. Alert and works his way back to pass. Reading zone coverage better and learning how to find and settle in the soft spots. Adequate as a blocker, but needs hand technique work to improve and sustain.
The Numbers: In 2021, he played in 12 games and had 43 receptions for 801 yards for 18.6 yard average and 7 TDs. At the Senior Bowl, he had a good performance, especially running routes with quick adjustments on the ball. During his career, he caught 105 passes for 2140 yards for a 20.4 average and 14 TDs. At the NFL Combine, he came in just over 6’4” and 208 lbs. Ran a 4.36 time with an exceptional 1.46 ten-yard split time. Added a 38.5”VL and an 11”4”BJ. It was an excellent workout. Similar to CeeDee Lamb in size, speed, body type, AA and development.
The Skinny: Fast athlete with speed to take the lid off a defense. Developing receiver with definite playmaking ability to be a weapon in a few roles both outside and in the slot. Impact in three wideout sets early. Playmaker needs to prove he will go over the middle consistently and must learn the full route tree to be a complete receiver. Fast rising top 50 prospect on my board after the NFL Combine. Probably goes in the early rounds with the strong demand at the position for playmakers. Athletic mobile junior flashed big play talent over his MWC career, earning first team honors in 2021. Two-time MWC honoree and John Mackey 2021 winner. Lined up as both an inline and flex performer over his four starting seasons. Fluid athlete with top athleticism to press the middle of the field and naturally run the seam. Agile and flexible to change directions or go up for the ball. Natural hands catcher with run after the catch ability that is just being tapped into in a number of formations. Fast developing receiver with huge upside as a vertical threat. Solid specimen and easy mover with some growth potential. He has improved significantly as a blocker. Quick athlete with the explosiveness off the line to get into a defender or his routes with the footwork and agility to be a very effective movement blocker with further technique work. Greatest asset is his developed playmaking ability. Early contribution as flex receiver and H-back with the receiving skills to become a difference maker. High grades for top overall development and receiving skills. Savvy route runner with very good instincts to read and adjust to coverage and sit in holes. Able to catch outside the frame with a nice receiving radius and huge hands (10 1/8”). Settles in the soft spots in zones to move the chains. Very dangerous on crossing routes with fine run after the catch ability and speed to break plays. Quick getting off the line and beats the jam to get a clean release. At the breakpoint, he separates well in coverage and creates a consistently reliable target. Tough in the shorter zones on crossing routes, hooks and underneath routes with good hands and the ability to adjust. Runs well and snatches the ball in a crowd. Difficult matchup in single coverage with a developed route tree. As blocker, he is quick on the snap with stocky athletic frame and good hand usage to get a surge at the point of attack. Needs development blocking, including a stronger punch with improved lower body power and footwork. In limited time inline, he graded out high as a blocker, relying more on toughness and athleticism than sound technique and functional strength. As a move blocker, gets into an opponent on 2nd level and shows quickness to sustain. On the move, shows the talent to seal and neutralize with the agility to reach backers, though needs technique and strength work.

The Numbers:   In 2021, he started 12 games and caught 90 passes for 1121 yards and 1 TD. Earned first team MWC and All-American honors. In 2020, he started every game and caught 22 passes for 330 yards, a 15-yard average and 4 TDs, earning 2nd team MWC honors. At the NFL Combine, he checked in at 246 lbs. and just under 6’4” with 32 1/2” arms and 10 1/8” hands. Did not run and did 18 reps in the lifting. Added a 33” VJ and a 9’9” BJ. Looked very good in the positional drills with the agility to adjust to the pass. Similar to former Colts’ Pro Bowler, Dallas Clark in size, play making ability, AA and developed receiving talent. Also, similar to George Kittle in many respects.

The Skinny:  Mobile sure handed prospect with very good athleticism to play in base and multiple sets with highly developed skills and LOD as a receiver. Quality addition with the athletic talent to give an offense an early playmaker. As a receiver, he has upside with soft hands, fine movement skills and good speed to stretch the seam. Versatile and marginal top 40 and rising prospect with the talent to surprise in the right offense. Emerging playmaker with skill set to be ideal for today’s pro-offenses.

Athletic, explosive senior completed an outstanding final season during his only year as a full-time starter. Earned first team Draft Insiders’ All-American and Big Ten honors for a well-rounded performance. Strong angular frame with sideline-to-sideline speed and the power to finish. Highly developed defender with the level to be a three down NFL starter early after playing both inside and outside. Top athlete with good strong frame and fine movement skills to play any position in the 4-3 set and inside in the 3-4. At the Mike position, he can be a playmaker with the ability to fill and beat lineman in matchups and finish. Performed well when asked to cover, blitz and play in space. Keen instincts with the physical skills to respond to reads, beat blocking angles and get to the ball. He can be a devastating and decisive wrap up tackler. When he arrives at the scene, there is seldom any yards after contact by runners. Shows a strong hand punch with the ability to lock out and keep blockers off his body. Displays the ability to jolt runners and very strong when taking on blocks at the point of attack. Able to strike blockers, stack, shed and engage the runner going thru the hole. Displays fine use of leverage and keeps his feet moving. Agile and fast to stay with backs and tight ends in pass coverage. Opens his hips easily to change directions with the burst to matchup in patterns. Improved as pass rusher in 2021 when used in that capacity. Effective as a blitzer, inside or outside and times his move well to finds soft spots in protection. Also has ability as an edge rusher and can line up there in the sub packages, though better suited for inside. Usually diagnoses plays well and takes sound angles in pursuit and has learned to use his aggressiveness well. Very good range, speed and athleticism and uses fine hand technique when scraping laterally. Good body flex helps him with tight pursuit angles. Unlocks hips with the acceleration to close. Rare COD and playing speed for his size with the smooth hips to turn and run-in coverage. Interesting NFL matchup potential with tight ends in the sub packages where his good length, awareness and speed can be very effective. Excels in space where his instincts and movement skills allow him to consistently be in the play. Showed burst as a pass rusher over his final two seasons and has real upside in that role as a pro. Good timing and adept at blitzes, stunts and twists. In 2021, he started 11 games and tallied 114 tackles, 17.5 TFL, 8 sacks, 2 FF, 5 QB hurries, no interceptions or PBU. Earned 1st team Big Ten honors. Over his three-year career, he played in 29 games and tallied 180 tackles, 25.5 TFL, 12 sacks, 3 FF, 1 FR, 1 interception and 14 QB hurries.  At the NFL Combine, he came in at just under 6’3”, 250 lbs. with 31” arms and 9 ¾” hands. Ran a 4.53 time but did not lift. Added a 40.5” VL and 10’8” BJ. At his pro day at Wisconsin, he 34 reps with a 3.94 short shuttle and 6.84 three cone. It completed an amazing postseason which elevated his stock significantly. Athlete with similar skill set and versatility of HOF Mike man Brian Urlacher and capable of filling any backer role in a front. Versatile backer and three down player for all packages. Talent to improve further with his best football in front of him. Displays a great deal of self-confidence with a competitive edge that transcends to the field and teammates. Clubs like the Patriots, Dolphins, Giants and Browns interested in late first/early 2nd round. Emerging impact and big play potential and just touching the surface as a blitz defender. Type to be every down defender early. Fast rising top 40 playmaker and probable surprise 1st round selection. Core starter for a defense and diverse three down defender.
