Ohio State Pro Day Workout

Ohio State Pro Day Workout Draws Huge Scouting Contingent

Pro Day Results – below

Frank Coyle / Head Scout & Staff

The National champion Ohio State Byuckeye’s  held their Pro day on Wednesday for  17 pro prospects. Over 140 NFL personnel, including six coaches and five general managers, gathered inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center for evaluations of 17 Ohio State draft prospects who hope to continue their football careers in the NFL. Several of the highly rated prospects stood on their NFL Combine results. A few players like LB Cody Simon, CB  Jordan Hancock , DT Ty Hamilton, safety Lathan Ranson and OT Josh Fryar looked sharp in drills and put up impressive numbers.

QB Will Howard had a strong passing session where he went through throwing drills. He worked with teammate receiver Emeka Egbuka and put on a show for scouts. Egbuka is a first round bubble prospect at this point and a strong showing yesterday may guarantee a top selection. He also ran a 4.45 sprint with a fast 1.50 ten yard split. Howard improved his stock again. He displayed a powerful arm with tight delivery, accuracy and touch. He interviewed after the event with several teams. His impressive 2024 season when he directed the Buckeyes to the national title after losing to Michigan in the season finale left a strong impression on NFL personnel men.

Players like OT Josh Simmons and OL Seth McLaughlin did not workout – still in the rehab process from early 2024 knee injuries. Simmons did lift and pumped out 34 reps while guard Donovan Jackson did 32 reps. DT Ty Hamilton did the most at the event with 35 reps from the power defender. Fellow DT Tyleik Williams was a particpant who fell during his 40 yard sprint. He tripped at 20 yards of the event and was taken to the locker work. He returned to the field with a minor sprain but discontinued his workout.

In attendance at Ohio State’s Pro Day:

141 total NFL personnel

Brian Schottenheimer – Cowboys

New NFL Salary Cap Sets Record

New NFL Team Salary Cap Sets New Record

NFL Free Agency and Trading Deadline Starts March 12, 2025

‘Word on the Street’

Frank Coyle / Head scout
www.draftinsiders.com

NFL teams now have a reference point when it comes to how much money they will have to spend when the new league year officially begins on March 12.

The NFL league office informed teams this week that the salary cap for the 2025 season will fall in the range of $277.5 million and $281.5 million. That’s a huge increase from last year’s salary cap of $255.4 million and an amazing $53 million the past two seasons from the 2023 salary cap of $224.8 million.

The salary cap, which actually decreased in 2021 due to the impacts of COVID-19, crossed the $200 million mark for the first time in 2022. This year’s cap could end up being $100 million more than it was in 2021, when the cap was $182.5 million.

Recent NFL Salary Cap by Year

Year    Salary Cap
2025   $277.5 million-$281.5 million
2024   $255.4 million
2023   $224.8 million
2022   $208.2 million
2021   $182.5 million
2020   $198.2 million
2019   $188.2 million
2018   $177.2 million
2017   $167 million
2016   $155.27 million

The NFL has seen the salary cap increase significantly, primarily through the most recent TV rights deals with broadcast partners. Last year’s $30 million salary cap increase was the result of the full repayment of all amounts advanced by NFL teams and deferred by the players during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as a massive increase in media revenue for the 2024 season, according to the league’s operations site. The Thursday night game has generated huge dollars as part of the Amazon Prime addition. The players received a significant piece of new revenue and have benefitted immensely from the new revenue sharing by the players union.

Both NFL Free agency and the trading period starts on March 12th, the first day of the new NFL calendar. The trade market may be equally busy this year with several high-profile players demanding deals – wideout Deebo Samuel and edge defender Myles Garrett. In addition, a few star QBs, Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford and Kurt Cousins will be part of decisions in several NFL front offices as the QB carousel begins this offseason. Expect numerous big names exchanging teams with salary cap numbers determining which veterans remain with their current roster.

NFL 2025 Trade Period – starts March 12, 2025

Commanders Aquire Saints CB Marshon Lattimore
Lions Acquire Edge ZaDarius Smith
Cowboys Deal for Wideout Jonathan Mingo

The NFL trade deadline has closed after a rush of moves by General Managers mostly from contenders to strengthen rosters for the playoff push. There has been the expected active period over recent weeks which could finish with  several deals which can have huge effects on the NFL playoff picture. The incumbent KC Chiefs have already benefited from their major addition of wideout DeAndre Hopkins who has provided scoring impact in his first games.

The Jets added receiver Davante Adams has connected with former teammate QB Aaron Rodgers to score the winning TD in their victory over the Texans.

Other veteran receivers like Chris Olave, Darius Slayton, Christian Kirk, Calvin Ridley, Treylon Burks, Kendrick Bourne, Brandin Cooks, Michael Thomas, Adam Thielen and Eli Moore drew interest in the final days, though were not moved by their current clubs. Olave and Kirk sustained recent injuries which may eliminate them from deals. Teams like the Bucs, Bills, Chargers, Steelers, Eagles, Commanders and Texans will entertain receivers for the stretch run in competitive conferences where every win makes a difference for a postseason berth.

Receivers DeAndre Hopkins, Davante Adams, Diontae Johnson and Jonathan Mingo have changed uniforms in hope of becoming playmakers. Hopkins and Adams have provided short term impact to the Chiefs, Jets and Ravens offense that were all in need for new playmakers.

Veteran defensive players like edge defenders Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith, and Baron Browning were traded for late selections within the last 24 hours, hoping to provide pass pressure in their contending team’s pursuit of the postseason.

Many of these veterans are high priced players and possible free agents this postseason. Playoff clubs will be limited to the waiver wire and practice squads to add new players through the NFL 2024 season.

NFL Extends 13 Invitations to Top Prospects for the NFL Draft in Detroit

Thirteen prospects have accepted invitations to the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit which begins on April 25. The top three QB prospects and wide receivers head a group which features 8 offensive players.

The QB contingent is headlined by probable #1 overall pick Caleb Williams of USC, followed by Jayden Daniels of LSU and Drake Maye of North Carolina. They are the probable first three selections held by Chicago, Washington and New England, all in dire need at the positions. This year, QB JJ McCarthy could be the 4th QB selected and possible as the 4th overall selection, which would be a new NFL record at the start of the draft process. J.J. McCarthy will not attend the NFL Draft in Detroit. Also OT Joe Alt and TE Brock Bowers declined invitations for the event.

Three times, QBs were selected with the first three selections in the  NFL Draft, 1971,  (Jim Plunkett, Archie Manning, Dan Pastorini), 1999 (Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith) and 2021 (Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance).

The exceptional wide receiver class could see the top three prospects come off the board in the top ten selections. Wideouts Marvin Harrison Jr. of Ohio State, Malik Nabers of LSU and Rome Odunze of Washington are also expected to be chosen in the top selections. They could be the start of a record setting class of receivers for both the early rounds and the complete draft process.
