The CFP Selection Committee choose their first Top 25 poll for the 2026 season with several highly questionable decisions. Miami heads the rankings with strong justification after an 8-0 run through the first half of the season. They play Notre Dame this week in a matchup with major implication for the national title. How Notre Dame is ranked #11 is just one glaring mistake in the initial weekly ranking. Granted Notre Dame’s schedule is weaker than many, their only loss is to #9 BYU by 28-24 and a highly questionable no call on an obvious pass interference in the last minute in the end zone.
As usual, Alabama gets the advantage by the SEC loaded committee. Alabama did beat Georgia which was an excellent win, though the Tide are a two-loss team with both defeats to non-Top 25 clubs. There are three SEC teams in the Top 10 rankings, all with two losses, Alabama, Texas and Ole Miss. The highest rated Big Ten club with two losses is Ohio. St who was ranked #12 in the first poll. The high early rankings insulate these SEC clubs from falling out of the Top 12 clubs. The top 12 teams will be decided on Dec. 6 with the top clubs bracketed in the final dozen clubs.
