With increasing interest in the NFL draft, the scouting combine has grown in scope and significance, allowing personnel directors to evaluate upcoming prospects in a standardized setting. Its origins have evolved from the National, BLESTO and Quadra Scouting organizations in 1977 to the media event it has become today.

Athletes attend by invitation only. Implications of an athlete’s performance during the combine can affect their draft status and salary, and ultimately their career. The draft has popularized the term “workout warrior”, whereby an athlete’s “draft stock” is increased based on superior measurable qualities such as size, speed, and strength, despite having an average or sub-par college career.

* Select players from any Group may arrive one day prior to their scheduled date listed above in order to assist with medical scheduling. This will be based on flight schedules and medical tests only and no players arriving early will have advanced contact with teams.

How are players selected for the NFL Combine?
Participants are determined annually by a Selection Committee. The Directors of both National and BLESTO scouting services, which combined represent twenty-five NFL teams, are joined by members of various NFL player personnel departments to form the committee. The participating NFL executives can rotate on a yearly basis, and remain anonymous. ALL eligible players are reviewed and voted on by the committee members. Each athlete receiving the necessary number of votes, by position, is then extended an invitation. While it is not a perfect science, the goal of the committee is to invite every player that will be drafted in the ensuing NFL Draft.

NFL Partners With East-West Shrine All-Star Game

The NFL is partnering with the historic East-West Shrine Game to increase development opportunities for coaches and draft-eligible players, the league announced today.

The NFL will supply the coaching staffs for the two teams from among current league assistant coaches whose teams do not advance to the playoffs. The NFL will also provide the game officials for the contest, which features some of college football’s best prospects.

The 92nd annual East-West Shrine Game will kick off at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, January 21, from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, and be televised live on NFL Network.

“The East-West Shrine Game is not only a showcase for tremendous athletes who have a dream of playing at the next level, it is also a venue for upwardly mobile coaches in the NFL,” said NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent. “This is an opportunity to further develop, evaluate and showcase our assistant coaches who may be our next generation of head coaches.”

At the conclusion of the NFL regular season, teams will nominate deserving assistant coaches who will be reviewed by a panel that includes NFL Football Operations staff, East-West Shrine Game leadership and two members of the NFL’s General Managers Advisory Committee. Once the head coaches are selected, each head coach will then fill his 12-person staff from among other NFL assistant coaches nominated by the clubs, a key job requirement for head coaches at every level of the sport.

Coaches nominated by NFL clubs must be active assistant coaches who display extraordinary teaching and communications skills, and are recognized for their integrity and commitment to excellence in the coaching profession. The coaches must be accomplished at developing and preparing players to compete in the NFL.

“It is an honor for the East-West Shrine Game to partner with the NFL to promote opportunities for professional growth and development not only for our outstanding players, but also for the potential future generation of head coaches in the league,” said Harold Richardson, executive director of the East-West Shrine Game. “We are proud to be able to provide a national stage for some of football’s greatest talents to develop their skills and showcase their abilities, all while supporting an exceptional cause.”

For more than 90 years, some of football’s greatest players and coaches have contributed to the tradition of the East-West Shrine Game, the nation’s first college all-star football game. Created by the Shriners in 1925, the game is driven by the desire to support Shriners Hospitals for Children in its mission to help children in need of expert medical care. Participating players make an annual visit to the local Shriners Hospital, visiting children and staff in an experience that they will truly never forget.

Team Needs
1. Quarterback – The Cowboys lost starting QB Tony Romo for the critical early thru midseason when Dallas lost 7 games in a row. He was reinjured late and has a disturbing injury history. Best value appeared to be prospects Carson Wentz or Jared Goff with the #4 pick before the two major trades. They may sit on the need and wait until the 2nd round and hope to land Connor Cook. They like Kevin Hogan in the middle rounds.

2. Defensive Line – The Cowboys lost veteran Greg Hardy to a season opening suspension and he failed to make a difference. Rookie DE Randy Gregory faces a suspension this September and DE Demarcus Lawrence has been suspended the first month of season due to testing positive. He is a talented edge rusher who has emerged as an upcoming sack artist. They need both ends and tackles for their 4-3 set and could use two of their high picks there. They have little depth that must be addressed. They like DE Joey Bosa and DeForest Buckner in the 1st round. They like DT Kenny Clark, Vernon Butler and Andrew Billings in the early 2nd round. They will probably address their line with multiple selections in a very deep group. They like DEs Bronson Kaufusi and Carl Nassib and DTs Maliek Collins and Hassan Ridgeway in the 3rd round. Expect the Boys to explore trading up for linemen in the early rounds.

3. Defensive Back – The Cowboys had major problems in the secondary last season and could address both the safety and corner spots in the early rounds. Starting corners, Brandon Carr and Orlando Scandrick have struggled in coverage. They liked top pick Byron Jones who settled in at free safety and graded out well. They like DB Jalen Ramsey in the first round. They also like corners William Jackson and Artie Burns and will consider them in the 2nd round. They like safeties Darian Thompson and Jeremy Cash on the 2nd day.

4. Wide Receiver – The Boys’ hope to address their receiving corps with a top three selection. Veteran star wideout Dez Bryant missed most of the season with a leg injury and was never a big factor in their offense. Fast vet Terrance Williams has been fairly productive with improved big play ability. Slot receiver Cole Beasley showed some playing ability in package offense. The talent is good this year and they could address this unit on the 2nd day and like prospects Tyler Boyd, Sterling Shepard, Braxton Miller and Michael Thomas there.

5. Linebacker – The Cowboys are set in the 4-3 scheme with a solid if unspectacular unit. Veteran Sean Lee moved outside with the addition of Rolando McClain to the Mike spot. Lee is a leader and playmaker though missed three games while McClain was reliable in the middle after missing a month due to suspension. OLB Hitchens was adequate. They have marginal depth overall and will hope to add an outside backer to complete the unit. They like Myles Jack and he would be great fit in the 1st round. They like Josh Perry, Kentrell Brothers and Jordan Jenkins and have them earmarked for the 2nd day.

Insiders’ Insights
The Cowboys finished last in the NFC East at 4-12, mainly due to Tony Romo’s recurring collarbone injuries. They hope to address their future passer and struggling defense with most of their top selections. They still need playmakers for the healthy return Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. Jerry Jones will consider the top back, Elliott with their 1st round selection. In addition, they have average talent after Dez Bryant at wideout and will look to add one quality prospect there, though not with their top selection. Defense is their highest priority especially along the line. The Greg Hardy signing was a major disaster in production and team morale. They have ends high on their 1st round list and one will be available. They like DT Kenny Clark have him high on their 2nd round list. They could select multiple defensive linemen and possibly add another end in the top 40. They like Bronson Kaufusi in the 2nd day. They are interested in a starting corner in the top 100 and like Artie Burns in the early 2nd round.

NFL Draft – Compensatory Draft Selections

The NFL awarded 13 teams a total of 33 compensatory draft selections Friday, which are granted under league rules to teams that lose more or better compensatory free agents than they acquire in the previous year. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors, developed by the NFL Management Council. This year, compensatory picks fall between Rounds 3-6.

The New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49es received the most compensatory picks this year, with 4 each. Beginning in 2017, clubs will be permitted to trade compensatory picks.

The 2016 NFL Draft will be held April 28-30 in Chicago. There will be 255 total draft selections over 7 rounds. There were two forfeited picks – Patriots in the 1st round and the Chiefs in the 3rd round.

The Broncos win Super Bowl L but the 2015 season was Cam Newton’s time to shine. That continued Saturday night at NFL Honors when he won the MVP with 48 of 50 possible votes.

Newton and J.J. Watt winning big awards was not a surprise during the award show. Watt had a message for all the people that doubted him along the way.

“I was a 2-star recruit coming out, and now I have 3 DPOY awards. So… screw all of you guys for doubting me,” Watt said.

Hall of Fame Inductees
Brett Favre, Kevin Greene, Marvin Harrison, Orlando Pace, Eddie DeBartolo Jr., Ken Stabler, Tony Dungy and Dick Stanfel were announced as the 2016 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

Comeback Player of the Year Eric Berry provided the most resonant moment of the night talking about the times he “felt like I couldn’t do it anymore” during his battle with cancer. He thanked his mom for being there for him during “lonely nights” and you could see how much the award meant to him. The night wrapped up with Anquan Boldin winning the Walter Payton Man of the Year, a worthy choice for one of the league’s class acts of the last decade.

Giants can play with anyone on the league, but must stay healthy and play more consistently. They have a potent attack and a young defense that must prove itself in big situations and overcome a few key injuries.
Dallas Cowboys – 9-7 –
QB Tony Romo operates behind a premier line to utilize Pro Bowl receiver Dez Bryant. They have questions related their ground game that needs to balance this offense. Their defense is average at best and they must prove they can beat playoff caliber offenses.
Washington Redskins – 4-12 –
Skins start another new QB this season with RG3 demoted to a backup role. Their defense needs to improve after another subpar performance in 2014. Skins might again struggle to make .500 in a tough balanced division.

NORTH
Green Bay Packers -11-5 –
Aaron Rodgers is still the premier QB in the game, though he will operate this season without veteran wideout Jordy Nelson. They hope to recover from a devastating playoff loss where the defense failed in big situations.
Detroit Lions – 10- 6 –
Lions should earn a playoff spot behind a potent attack directed by veteran QB Matt Stafford. Their improving veteran defense will miss DT Shu.
Minnesota Vikings – 8-8 –
Vikes look to premier tailback Adrian Peterson to provide impact for young veteran QB Teddy Bridgewater to continue to improve further in this young attack. Defense has improved steadily over recent seasons.
Chicago Bears – 6-10 –
Bears look to erratic veteran QB Jay Cutler to attack this offense. The defense was one of the worst in this league last season and new additions may be only adequate.

SOUTH
New Orleans Saints – 11-5 –
The Saints organization improved their porous defense that gives them the edge in one of the more balanced divisions in football. QB Drew Brees is capable of leading this club to the Show again.
Atlanta Falcons – 10-6 –
Falcons are thinking division title after a disastrous past two seasons. They face a very tough schedule that might be the equalizer. Their defense can only improve after a weak 2014 performance.
Carolina Panthers – 7-9 –
Panthers look to ride QB Cam Newton to the top of the division, though their roster has made little overall improvement. They face a very tough schedule and will go through some painful growing pains in 2011.
Tampa Bay Bucs – 5-11 –
The Bucs begin the Jameis Winston era with him operating a talented young offense that needs time to develop. HC Lovie Smith added young vets for a weak defense that could make big strides this season.

WEST
Arizona Cardinals – 11-5 –
Cards look to ride the return of vet QB Carson Palmer to rise to the top of the toughest division in the NFL.
They look to new veterans to improve their defense that has lost key front seven starters in recent offseasons.
Seattle Seahawks – 10-6 –
Seahawks may be hard pressed to win this divisional title again. QB Russell Wilson directs a strong run oriented offense while their defense still remains among the elite in the game.
St. Louis Rams – 9-7 –
Rams look to build off an improved offense directed by new QB Nick Foles. Their defense relies on their dominant front four that makes them dangerous to make the playoffs.
San Francisco 49ers – 5-11 –
The 49ers sustained numerous key losses including HC Jim Harbaugh and half their defense. Young QB Colin
Kaepernick faces a difficult task with new starters in key positions. 49ers may struggle to attain the .500 mark.

Pats look to premier QB Tom Brady to direct this changing potent offense. The new ground game and receivers could rank them at the top of the league. Their suspect changing defense will determine their final fate in key games.
New York Jets – 6-10 –
Jets look to vet QB Ryan Fitzpatrick can direct this offense after a horrible offensive showing in 2014. This defense can rank among the top five in the game.
Buffalo Bills – 5-11 –
Bills are still rebuilding and will look to their young players to establish themselves as quality NFL players. Their QB position continues to go through turnover and remains a mystery. Their defense ranks among the league’s toughest and continues to improve.

NORTH
Cincinnati Bengals – 11-5 –
The Bengals look to QB Andy Dalton to step up and take this club further in the playoffs after one game exists over his career. Their defense has been the major culprit and rarely improvesd under HC Marvin Lewis.
Baltimore Ravens – 10-6 –
The Ravens will look to veteran QB Joe Flacco to keep this offense among the top scoring attacks in the game.
The defense is still at playoff levels, but must improve in pass coverage to go further in the postseason.
Pittsburgh Steelers – 8-8 –
Big Ben is coming off an outstanding 2014 performance leading this high powered attack. The Steel defense lost several key starters that will demand young players to step up if they intend to win in this tough division.

Browns continue to rebuild and look to young QB Johnny Manziel to get them to respectability. Their 1-6 finish produced another sub .500 season. Their defense must improve in run defense to make any overall progress.

SOUTH
Indianapolis Colts – 11-5 –
QB Andrew Luck carries this average club and that has dominated this division in recent seasons. This young club needs to improve to go further in the postseason especially their offensive line and ordinary defense. They get a favorable early schedule that should allow them to claim the divisional lead
Houston Texans – 9-7 –
The Texans returned to respectability last season behind a dominant performance by DE/TE JJ Watt. Their average offense looks to veteran QB Brian Hoyer to direct this mediocre attack. Marginal firepower may limit this club in big game situations.
Tennessee Titans – 6-10 –
The Titans look to top pick Marcus Mariota to bring this club to respectability. They have problems on both sides of the ball and probably go through difficult growing pains this season.
Jacksonville Jaguars – 5-11 –
Jaguars look for improvement from young QB Blake Bortles and rookie back TJ Yeldon to improve this low ranked attack. Club is probably a year away from challenging .500 mark.

WEST
San Diego Chargers – 11-5 –
The Chargers are a loaded club with QB Philip Rivers directing a veteran club. They can win the West title behind a young veteran defense that continues to improvebut needs their troubled special teams to improve significantly.
Denver Broncos – 10-6 –
Broncos hope to make a run at title in what appears to be Peyton Manning’s final season. They need their defense to recover from their late season collapse last year to retain AFC West rule.
Kansas City Chiefs – 8-8 –
Chiefs need their offensive weapons QB Alex Smith and runner Jamaal Charles to step up this season to challenge for the playoffs. They rely on their emerging young defense to continue to improve and rank among the best in the AFC.
Oakland Raiders – 6-10 –
Raiders look to young QB Derek Carr to benefit from the addition of top pick WR Amari Cooper to open up this attack. They need overall improvement on both sides of the ball to even challenge for a .500 season.
