Giants Acquire QB JJ McCarthy

The Giants announced a trade on Monday when they acquired QB JJ McCarthy from the Vikings and sent a 5th round pick in the NFL Draft 2027 to complete the deal. McCarthy was the 10th overall top pick in the NFL Draft 2024 after leading Michigan to a national championship. He was the 5th of 6 QBs chosen in the first round in that draft class.
As a rookie, he sustained a knee injury in the preseason and missed the entire season. In 2025, he started 10 games with mixed results which made the 2026 preseason vital for retaining the starters’ role. In his 10 starts last year, he completed 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards with 11 TDs and 12 interceptions. When new vet Kyler Murray signed this offseason, McCarthy lost a short competition in training camp. He expressed his displeasure to the Vikings and asked for a trade. The Giants were looking to add a backup type after losing starter QB Jaxson Dart for the season in the second game of the season to a knee injury which required surgery.
McCarthy was a good deal off ability, age and experience. He is young and talented and in his third season in the NFL. His mobility will be a welcome addition here as he settles into their QB room. Starting veteran QB Jameis Winston has been shaky in two games and faces a key start this week vs the Cardinals at MetLife. How fast McCarthy absorbs the system will determine any playing time. He needs work with his decision making and throwing mechanics to improve his accuracy. He may sit a few weeks before being ready for starting duty. Winston’s performance will determine how fast the Giants feed him the system and game plan. McCarthy was an interesting addition who could pay big dividends for just a late draft selection.
